The tint laws vary by state and we don't know where you're from. In most cases the sides are not illegal.

It's against the law in CA.... they are usually overlooked as long as they aren't too dark. I got pulled over for tinted windows in my MR2 (they were really dark) - the officer told me he wouldn't have cared if they weren't so dark.

i talked to some guy from "mr. tint" in san jose and he said that driver/passenger sides were legal as long as they were of a certain shade or less. which makes sense since my accord coupe has factory/dealer tint. it's very very very light though, but tinted still.

Yeah, in Washington, it's legal to a certain point. If it's too dark...then it's illegal.

Mine is too dark, and I have been pulled over for it. And I have gotten a ticket for it. And I paid the ticket for it. And I then read the state law regarding tinting, and saw that it is permitted to have darker tint with a doctors prescription....so what did I do? I went and got a doctors prescription. Now I carry the prescription and a printout of what the law states in my glovebox. I haven't had to use it yet.

I have dark tint too on the sides. I'm pretty sure its too dark to be legal, but I've never had a problem. I'm going to eventually get it redone in a lighter, legal shade since its getting old anyway.

I've got 20% onyx tint all the way around (excluding the windshield) any tint on the front windows is illegal, but I'm mindful to roll my window's down most of the time. I'm also getting a doctor's note eventually.

I got mine at 4%. Which is REALLY dark all around. Looks nice and it IS illegal but the cops could careless. Ive been pulled over a bunch of times and have only gotten 1 ticket so far and thats because he was trying to get people to leave the illegal racing street. But yes the laws change from state to state. Most officers could care less about tint.

I never understood tint on a nice car...

If I had some crappy car, then I would definitely tint the windows to make sure no one knew it was me driving it...

Martini - In Arizona you need a letter from a doctor stating that it is medically necessary for you to have darker tint than the law allows. Then, you need to send this letter to the DMV, and they send you back an exemption letter (with a very official looking state seal signed by the DMV God) specifically stating the person's name and vehicle VIN which you carry in your glovebox. What a pain in the *** - but I did it........have not been pulled over yet. It's amazing how laws differ from state to state.. why can't we just have one set of laws?

Now if I could only get a letter from my Doc saying that it is medically neccessary for me to drive beyond the speed limit..

my tint is sooo illegal, its quite funny. I have pure mirror reflective tint (you could see a pimple from 3 feet away), but heres how i get away with it. In the daytime, im always driving around with my windows down (getting used to not having AC before i get my FMIC). At night is when my windows are up. I havent gotten caught yet. And hopefully i wont until i get regular "dark" tint

i dont know... i think dark tints would definitely look good on a black car... just my taste though. My vert has no tints at all and sometimes i get confused as to whether i put my windows up or down. Drives me nuts looking at my car while im working and thinking "damn, i forgot to put the windows up.", when they're actually up already.

Nope. Tint is 100% illegal in the state of CA (on the driver and passenger side windows). The officer that inspected my window after I had the tint removed even called out a second officer to make sure that my windows had no tint on them because they have a bit of a blue haze to them (just the way they came from the factory) - he said that tint on the driver & passenger side window is illegal.

edit: ...and, the ticket is $75, it's not a fix-it-ticket (you have to pay $75), tint costs about $10/window to remove and the inspection by a police officer (which is required) is $15.. so it ain't cheap to get caught.

I thought it's really difficult to get the old tint off. $10 for removal sounds really low. The previous owner has a really light tint on my car. It's not noticeable until you see the edges of the windows.

Depends on which state you are at. The Tint law are different in each state.

here is a site you can research your state's tint law.

Tint is really easy to get off of the windows. I had tint on my front windows of my Pathfinder (when i had it ), and got pulled over in Mono County. CHP gave me a fix-it ticket and I took the car to a tint shop and they removed the tint with a razor blade. Seemed simple enough that I was pissed that I paid them to do it.

Anyway, just keep your windows down if you're worried at all. I plan to get my FD tinted as soon as it's financially feasible, and I won't say no to tint on the front windows (otherwise how gay is it to have one of four windows tinted?...just get a cover then).

i tint side windows everyday
and it is definitely illegal in Illinois
i have have my side windows tinted for 15 yrs
it is no different than braking the speed limit ( that too is illegal) some people just dont care
as far as the shade of tint on a car everybody is different.
i personally like 20% all around and no front strip
and every car looks better with tint even the junky ones
removing tint on side windows is as easy as 409 and a razor blade scrapper.

word of advice to those who are going to tint make sure shop can tint your rear window in one piece if not goto next shop. window tinting is an art form and no one is a master. they get better with every tint job. also there is no perfect tint job

It's illegal if they're too dark...mine are illegal. I never got a ticket for them because I drive with my windows down 95% of the time.

I read over the rules and it confirmed my belief. ANY tinting on the side windows is illegal in Cali. If you put anything on the sides it has to be CLEAR in visible wavelengths. Cali sucks . I have pretty dark tint too, DOH.

Here in Ohio, the legal limit is 50%.

Mine are 15% all around (cept front). I just keep the windows rolled down when I am driving in town, up when on the highway. Try not to ever drive in the rain anyways so that really isn't much of an issue.
