how to test if a car amplifier is dead?
how to test if a car amplifier is dead?
I have a 4 channel Sony amp that I've owned for about 4 years. It's worked fine since purchased. The other day it blew a fuse. I've replaced the fuse but it doesn't work. I even put the amp in my friend's truck to get my wiring out of the equation and still no sound. The power lights come on, but no sound.
Is there a way to reset an amp, or to test it officially? maybe test resistance or something technical other than "plug it in and see if it works"
The only thing I noticed is that I'm pretty sure it normally makes a relay click type noise about 2 seconds after getting power and that's when you hear the sound start. I no longer hear that click noise, even with the power lights on. it has thermal, current, and something else protection, none of those warning lights come on either(which is good).
it might just be time to replace it, but it is rather odd.
thanks,
jimmy

Many times it's just a ground that has come loose from the terminal. Check and make sure that it is securley fastened down too. Also check your power chord all the way back to the amp. An exhaust manifold could burn through the wire and it would blow fuses pretty easily. check where your wire goes through the fire wall and make sure there are no abraisions to the wire. If this doesn't help you can usually go to circuit city or best buy buy a new ground wire and they will check it for free. If you have to get another 4 channel I highly recommend an Alpine 4-channel digital amp. around $400.
