How do you recondition faded exterior plastic(99 Lip)?
I have a 99 Front Lip that is a year old and it's looking pretty sad. It's a faded greyish/black. I'm sure it's because I used tire dress on it or something... Does anyone know how to recondition plastic? I am looking for more of a permanent fix as opposed to just putting black trim dress on it every time I wash it.
TIA

Hey David,
I'm afraid to paint it. I don't want to mess it up. I wonder if that fusion paint really does bond as well as the can says, "at the molecular level"

john, Just take it off and paint it. Krylon Plastic fusion or even Duplicolor paint will work very good. You can use it to paint the plastic base that covers the bottom seal to the windshield, and other plastic pieces too.

faded lip
Hey jpandes, I've never tried to paint mine, but when my lips is dirty and worn looking, I use Mothers Back To Black. You simply wipe it on, no buffing or polishing, then wipe it off. I guarantee it will make your lip look new. It's really amazing stuff. If your lip is really faded, you may have to use a second coat. The shine won't last forever but it wont dissappear in 3 days either. But that really does not matter for it is so easy and quick to apply. I'll go clean half my lip with it and leave the other half alone, and post the picture for you later in this post. Check out the picture and make your own decision!!!!

Yes, Back To Black by Mother's rocks! Only problem is it washes off with rain, just like most of the stuff you spray on your tires.
After I wash my car, I do my tires (with another product) and then do the front lip, the sides just under the back of the doors, and the rear plastic molding under the bumper by the exhaust.
And if I feel sexy I do the molding in between the hood and the front window. Makes a world of differece there since it is so dry and grey from the sun.

I spoke to the guy that owns the body shop where I had my car repaired. He turned me on to this Silcone Bumper Coating from P & S sales.in San Francisco. It's really thick and isn't supposed to wash off in the rain.
I've only had it on for a week and it hasn't rained yet either.

When I had an R1 lip, I use to paint it with rubber undercoating, and it would last a couple of years till I had to retouch it lightly. I think it looked neat
And don't bug me about the snow. It was a light sprinkle that day

I tried the Mother's back-to-black, black shoe polish (a Corvette showers' trick) and even got hold of some black plastic dye called Forever Black.
Both of them worked temporarily. The Mother's didn't look that great, and faded fast. The dye looked pretty good but looked patchy since it would fade unevenly.
Finally I hit it with flat black SEM Bumper Coat paint.
The paint is the only thing that worked. I did a lot of primering and sanding since mine was scratched up. So I just touched it up again with the paint since the grey primer was showing through. I held a piece of cardboard over the bumper and sprayed the bottom edge of the lip. Looks fine, and if you don't use the primer layer, it won't look funny when (not if) it gets scraped again.
