Help with front door speakers

Got an 88 SE here (God I'm sick of saying that, I'm going to make a profile here one of these days) When I was using my old radiotape deck the front right door speaker was the only one that worked. Now that I've hooked up a new CD head from 2000, I hear nothing out of neither front speakers. The back work great, and I changed them with newer, better speakers, but I can't get sound out of that speaker in the front. If nothing else, since this is hidden behind fabric, it's impossible to find and replace like I plan to. But does this mean the terminals are bad? Or that I blew the speaker with this more powerful, new head? Or that I've just hooked something up wrong? I used a wiring harness and everything, but I'm very close to trying to lead new wires to the doors or just mount some speakers in the dashboard or something.

If you have speakers in the doors, someone else put them there because the factory location is in the dash firing at your knees. The two front speakers are powered by a weak amplifier thats mounted under the glovebox (actually integrated w/the right speaker), so you need to run wire from your new deck in order for your speakers to work.

Actually on the 88+ FC there are provisions in the front doors for 6 inch speakers just left of your knee.

On the 86 and 87 FC, the factory hole/ provision for door speakers is a ISO 5 sized location just above the arm rest.

These are in addition to the ISO 5 sized speakers in the dash location.

But back to the problem at hand, JumpyRoo are the door speakers aftermarket or factory installed under the factory grill/pocket? Chances are something just didn't get wired correctly, but any factory speaker that is 14 years old is more than likely needing replacement as the paper or surrounds I am sure are falling apart.

He is exactly right. In fact my 87 GXL came with the factory CD/Tape Combo that includes the speakers that are in the middle of the door above the armrest. This set-up also includes two switches located to the right of the head unit wich allow your to turn the door speakers on and off.

Pull the door panel and look at the wires where they are soldered, to the speakers, the wire on one of mine broke right at the solder joint, and caused the speaker to be intermittent as it would sometimes contact the speaker as the car bumped down the road. I dont know if this is cause from fatigue by the door opening or closing a million times over the years or what, but I have ran into the same situation with other makes of cars also.

If one speaker was working up until you installed the new head unit, I'd say that you probably just installed some of the wiring to the new unit incorrectly or you could just have the fader set to the rear only. I could see this as being possible if your not use to the unit. I think even if you did blow out the speaker, you would still get some sound from it, it would just be low and muffled.

Sorry I haven't been keeping up with my threads here... I got really sick, but that's a different story especially considering I'm not sick anymore.

Yes, the door speakers were aftermarket. Crappy Pyramid speakers. Dual paper cone from a long time ago, and unprotected from the fabric of the door (which they were behind). I also pulled the dash speakers. I pulled all the speakers in the car.

I guess it's my dream to supe my RX-7 up to ridiculous amounts of horse power over time, but for right now, my concern is stereo. I've decided to make my car one of those super serious stereo machines. Since I got out of the hospital I spent my off time from work pulling the back seat out of the car and putting together a dual fifteen inch sub box, it's airtight sealed bandpass. I'm working on a bracket system to house the box securely (against inertia *and* theft)... I wouldn't have taken out the back seat at all except for the fact that it's worthless, in my opinion unsafe, and that when the box is on the back seat (with the seat down, or up) it's so high it blocks out the rear view mirror. I face it backwards... I have twelve other speakers in the car. Four tweaters, four midrange 6.5 inch round two way speakers, and four 6x9 cones... two four way and two three way. For right now, my amp is a used but tested 600 watt Kenwood amp (the only non Pioneer part thus far) that runs off four gauge wiring grounded to the frame. My CD head is the DEH 72000, which is one of those nifty difty animated dot matrix displays with all sorts of equilizing functions. I am looking to pick up a DEQ 7200 or DEQ 7600 EQ by Pioneer, but it seems like that money is temporarily going to be rerouted to getting a new starter. Looking for a cheap IP Bus CD changer, too. This will all be controlled (har har) by a nifty steering wheel borne remote control that Pioneer made for a while. I have a GM X552 amp sitting around that is only three hundred watts but now I've considered using it for my speakers instead of selling it in place of the Kenwood. The head unit is only 45x4... Well, the head unit doesn't even matter at all now because I made the mistake of unhooking it from the harness when it was working (don't fix what isn't broken) to try to wire in the power antenna and coming back a few weeks later today to put it in and have it not turn on at all no matter what I do. So now I get to drive up to Itasca tomorrow (in another car, since my Rex needs a starter) to flash my warrenty and get this thing fixed. Or find out that it works just fine and there's a much bigger problem with my RX-7.

If anyone has suggestions for mounting all sorts of different speakers throughout your cabin, go right ahead. And consider that I don't really care that much about the lining or carpeting getting torn up... I've had good luck makeshifting a nice fit for 6x9s in the back speaker ports, but that's it.

Thanks all for your posts while I was gone.

I have a DEQ-9200 , Pioneer DSP EQ in my 85 RX-7 and a DEHP-720 (cd player in my 85) , There good EQ's, I installed that thing back in 1996 and its still a current model!

When looking for speaker locations, its basically how much do you want to spend?

A good installer can mount speakers ANYWHERE, if you wanna pay the labor.,..

I even considered buying new seats with speaker ports fanned out behind the headrest but decided not to go with the price. I think I may do that far in the future. But I'll spend a reasonable amount of money to achieve minimal reduction in rattling and buzz. However, I'd like to do the installation myself. I just pulled the broken/stupid amp out of the dashboard... in my opinion this renders the "Front Speaker" portion of the wiring harness useless since, even if it does only require a circuit tester to find the speaker wires among the mess of amp wires on the speakers, it's still a mess just the same. I'm having the front and back speaker amps bolted to the bass box next to the bass amp, so all my wiring will go direct to the backseat compartment and than pan out around the car. That's going to dictate installation a bit. But it leaves a lot of options. For example, the bolts that used to hold the latch for the back seats could prolly be used to hold some kind of speaker bracket... I dunno, what ideas did you have pricewise?

I'm about to bid on a 9200 for $120. Think it's a good idea?

A DEQ9200 for 120 , hell yeah if its got all the parts and works!

I ONLY bolt amps to a box if Im forced to by either a cusotmers recommendation or if there ABSOLUTELY no other place!

What you are doing is giving someone a free amp or 2, when they break your back glass out. Of course most the time with thefts, make it easy to get cuz they're gonna really trash your car trying to remove it from a hard place...

A good thief (even tho a good thief is a piece of **** - Sorry had to say that) WILL GET WHAT HE CAME FOR, no MATTER what he has to do to GET IT!
