head unit installed anywhere but the stock spot

has anyone done this on the 1st gen? the car im getting has the 2din spot filled with 3 guages, they're a little too large to fit in a row, so they take place of the radio. has anyone ever installe dthe head unit anywhere else?

im assuming that my solution will to be to get smaller guages that i can put in a horizontal row, and the stereo in the remaining space. anyone wanna trade larger guages for smaller ones?

You can remove the face and install it anywhere you like - like the A-pillar. Then mount the radio anywhere else in the car. Just use computer ribbon cable to connect the face with the chassis. Of course, it makes it harder toe use the CD player. But it allows you to moun the face anywhere, even to your windshield if you like.

interesting!...just where can you purchase this computer ribbon cable, does it have to be done custom, or do they actually sell this? i guess with a remote control, you could get pretty imaginative with the placement of the head unit.

Oh boy! It will be a pain in the *** to do. You have to solder each of those pin connectors on the back of the face plate on, then make a pin switch so the headunit thinks its closed so the CD will play. They make units used on classic cars that are hide aways and run on just remote, so they do not loose the factory look.
Just do this!
