Has anyone used 6" subs?

I am looking to make and install some custom sub boxes for my FB. I want to keep it stealth and stock, so I am going to install the subs in the hatch tailight space, behind the piece of carpet that hangs down. Max7 has two 8's back there so it can be done. The space would be tight with 8's so I'm thinking making boxes with 6's would be a helluva lot easier. I figure two 6's in sealed boxes with proper amplification should sound nice and tight and loud enough for the little FB.

I'm looking at the JL 6W0.....they only requre .175 ft3 of space, and I think I can make that work easily using MDF and hopefully a rectangular box.

Anyone used 6's as subs before?

Right on.

not what you want to hear but I looked into those before. If you get them I will like to know what they sound like. I know Bazooka tubes (sp?) sound good in 6".

I would personally prefer one 8" to two of the 6" variety if it is a matter of space / weight. Best case scenario, 6.5 / 6.75" speakers probably don't put out any real bass under 40hz (if you could actually see the true frequency curve).
On the other hand, some 8's will get darn close to 20hz, although down quite a bit in db at lower frequencies, but still much better in sound quality overall when using them as the subwoofer.
True, manufacturers can build subwoofer systems using smaller speakers and get a relatively deep / solid output due to port tuning and driver design, but for someone building their own setup - I would say run away from the 6" sub idea.

It's definitely a decision driven by space....I am trying to get boxes to fit within the space near the taillights of an FB, behind the piece of carpeting that hangs down from the hatch. It's a very tight, awkward space. 8's would be difficult to fab a box for with the requisite volume requirements. It would have to have several angles to conform to the shape of the hatch. I think I should be able to build a box that is rectangular with the 6's.

I'm not looking for SPL or hugely loud, booming bass. I just want some nice tight bass to fill in the lows that are lacking with my current set up. I'm not an audiofile but I appreciate clean sound far more than volume or "boom." I've got a Nak head unit, a PPI amp, some Boston components and cheapo Inifinity rears and it sounds super clean. But it lacks bass....from what I've read of the 6's I think two in well built sealed boxes will fit the bill. And a thief will never break in after the box, because he won't even know it's there.

Right on.

Its your baby, but from 10+ years of experience in the field - you will likely be somewhat dissapointed, particularly if sound quality is the issue.

6" subs will not do much heavy hitting. I say try to fit 8" subs in.

8" would be ideal, 6" is really too small.
