Good aftermarket speakers for FD.....

So yeah I've decided to get a new deck, the Alpine CDA-9815, it's got a ton of **** and new features built into it and so now I wanna upgrade the stock speakers (No Bose system)

From what I hear I can fit these sizes:

Front: 5 1/2"
Rear: 6" x 8"

What speakers out there do you guys recommend? Well actually I know which brands but don't know which models. Basically I'm looking at Alpine, Polk and MB Quarts. So yeah any specific models do you guys have good experience with?

TIA.

5x7 or 6x8 will work in the rear without much hassle. You might be able to do 6x9 but you'll have to hog out some of the bracket. I haven't done this though.

I have 6.5" diameters in my front, non-bose speaker mounts. I had to do some drum sanding and dremel work but the fit is great. My speakers are Boston Pro Component. Hell, I even have my crossovers on the speaker mount but I had to get pretty creative. You can't tell that there is anything other than stock by looking, but you sure can by listening

A friend of mine had MB Quarts in his all of his cars, and I have to say it sounds great. However the price tag that comes along with those speakers is pretty steap. I can't help with sizes or models, just figured I would throw some input.

memphis audio or JL components would be something good to consider as well.

Alright, first off.

Alpine CDA-9815 is a NICE headunit. I have one in my Protege and its INCREADABLE.

Boston Pro series are all on sale at Tweeter right now because they're getting ready to replace them. Like $150 off the original price.

Yes, the Boston Acoustics ProSeries are componants.

Yep, I had a set in my old 300ZX Twin Turbo and they are excellent speakers. You're going to have to figure out where you're going to mount the tweeters. You can either cut a hole in your door panels and flush mount them, or mount them on that little plastic triangular "sail" panel behind the side view mirrors. The latter is how I did it with the Z with the tweeters pointed at me, ear level.

Also, with any component set, it's recommended that you run them off an amp (minimum 75W) and not the source unit for optimal sound.

I have that headunit. It is awesome, easy to use (quick access to subwoofer and speaker channels) looks awesome as well. If your looking for real low budget speakers, polks are impressive

Re: Boston Pro Components.
To put it this way, at medium volume levels my friends were looking for my subwoofer only to realize that I didn't have any. If you are looking for a discreet sound system the Bostons are a great place to start. I still would like some more sub, I might put an 8 or 2 in the face of each of the bins, not sure yet, but I do like the sound and the stealth of the Bostons. I picked them up new on Ebay for dirt cheap, look around a bit and you can score a good deal.

Hey did you hook up a 10-gauge amp wiring kit to this HU? I read on a few sites that they recommend the kit due to the high power output from the HU's amp.

BTW, I got Alpine speakers for both front and rear.

Even thought the alpine deck has V-drive power, I highly reccoment you get an external amplifier if you plan on sinking any kind of money over $150 in to a decent component set of speakers up front in your car.

Just get a 100w x 2 amp and run the rears off of the Alpine deck.

You should definately run power from the battery to the head unit, those V-Drive units draw a lot of current, and sometimes will shut off if not wired to the battery.

I don't know what he paid for it, but they go for about ~$350.

Thanks SpeedKing.

I'm always suspect when headunits list their wattage, so I need to ask this question:
If this HU is rated at 60x4, is that REALLY comparable to say an Alpine amp (stand alone amp only) of 60x4? Is the THD comparable? How about the dynamic headroom and stereo seperation? Maybe things have changed but I remember when a high power deck was stated to be 40 watts per channel was really about 16, tops. Anyone care to "educate" me?

the 60w x 4 alpine's are aprox 26 watts rms
the 50w x 4 alpine's are aprox 18 watts rms
thats why they make such a difference
if you run components in front and they retail at 200-250 or below you can run the headunit power.
yes it will still sound better if you get a good 4 channel and run the speakers with it.

I won't be running an external amp with the aftermarket Alpine speakers since I don't want to deal with it. The new HU should be powerful enough to handle it.......................

yeah the 9815 can do it, but you will get a HUGE improvement with a 100w x 2 amp when you decide to upgrade

Oh yeah? The Alpine speakers that I got are 40RMS and 200w peak power. What is the minimum amp that I can get to pair up with these speakers?

what model did you get, a type S or type R speaker?

with even a 35-50w x2 amplifier you will notice a big difference.

No distortion yaaaaay!
