FD3S Stock Audio Alternatives

I've had several members comment about my stock looking stereo on my 93. The one on my cardoman site; http://www.cardomain.com/ride/657532/2 is a stock Mazda 6 Disc in-dash CD Changer with AM/FM Cassette. I believe it was from a Millenia. I've used both the Bose and non-Bose version of that 6-Disc. Both required no modification to the stereo harness, though I did notice that the non-Bose sounded better. I had to crank up the volume on the Bose version just to get it to a decent noise level or higher. I've also used the old Style Millenia CD player also with no modifications to the harness. The current stereo im running is from a 1999 Mazda Miata Cd Player (single din) along with the Cassete Tape (single din). All these stereo fit perfect into the stereo surround opening for me. The Miata version did require splicing the amp wire to a switched 12v source to turn on the Amps on my bose system. (please keep this in mind that my system was a bose)
If you guys need pictures of the stereo in question say so and I post some pictures. The great thing about these stereos were the stock looking, though all are lighted in green. But that's not really a problem, since its very easy to change out the rubber condoms on the lights.
On a side note. Those that say if you install the Mazda 6-Disc (double din version) you wont be able to install your orginal stereo (single dins) since you have to remove a bracing bar your wrong. They only thing you have to do is use the metal double din clamps from the 6-disc to your Stock single din CD & Cassete.

Remember I take no responsibility to what happens to your car, this was just my experience in installing various Mazda Stereos.

Thanks for the info! Your timing was perfect for me. I am just now looking into buying a 2000 Millenia Bose 6cd unit because my cd player crapped out. Now I am wondering if I should just look for a non-bose unit though?

Would you recommend going with a non bose over the Bose unit?

I would recommend the non-bose. It sounded better and a hell of a lot louder than the Bose system. (and I even had the Bose system in my car). On the 2000 Millenia I believe that wont fit since Mazda switched over to the new style harness plug. A Pre-2000 Mazda stereo should fit without any modifications to the harness.

Forgot to mention this.
One word of advice, I've had to buy 2 Mazda 6Disc stereos in just over a year. Both had an E-01 error (CD Changer Malfunction). I guess the Stereos weren't made to handle the abuse of the RX-7's suspension. Oh, and both were brand new. I switched over to the Miata CD because the Miata's suspension is just as stiff as ours. So far so good.
So I wouldn't recommend getting a 6Disc.

Thanks. I read a few more things about the 6cd and a lot of folks do get error codes even when installed in the Millenia. There are places that can fix the codes for you but I don't know where or how much. Sucks because I really like having the changer. And I wanted to stay away from having to mess with the harness. In one of the Mazda forums I read the connector changed in '01 but I have not been able to confirm that.

The 2000 I was looking at had an 8pin, 12pin & 16pin connector.

Other than the double dins you have tried my favorite looking oem unit is the one out of the Nissan Altima. I haven't actually seen the connectors on the back of our Bose units and posted a pic request with no luck. (guess I am going to have to take them out to see them.)

I think the Altima has the newer style connectors but I have no way to confirm...here is a pic....

I thought it was 2000 because the ones I've seen on ebay listed as 2000 Mazda Stereos have the wrong harness plug. If you really want a CD changer you can try to find the External CD Changer from the Millenia. Only problem is most sellers dont sell the harness you need to connect the stereo to the Changer, but I have seen some that do. Or maybe someone can chime in on where you can get the harness. Or just go to the junkyard because the Millenia had the harness installed even if it didn't have the CD changer.

What happened to your CD player and why would you purchase it through them when its much simplier and cheaper through ebay.

Hah, after 11 years my CD player has grown a bit of a personality. If I hit a bump the radio(not cd, but radio!) will skip. The cd player will spit the cd out if you fast forward or rewind and thats if it decides it likes the cd in the first place. The volume **** broke off some years ago and ive been turning a metal ****. Its not mazda's fault its time's fault. I prefer not to buy anything from mazda when possible. I like some of clarion's decks, they can actually blend in with stock almost(black face, adjustable display color) so theyre probably who ill end up with. But the radio/cd player is not my priority right now I'm sorry to say.

Can anyone provide details on how to change the rubbers? How, for example, would one get the new condoms to match the amber FD lighting?

I went back and forth with a couple of forum members here after I did my install. Here is a write up one of the guys did.

You need 10 lamp covers aka condoms. They are only a couple of bucks for like 20. Orange ones will give you the amber look. The red ones will match autometer gauges. Look through a few of my posts and you can find pics of my headunit which was green and I changed over.

https://www.rx7club.com/interior-exterior-audio-26/2001-2002-millenia-bose-head-unit-swap-757172/

Good luck! It is pretty easy to do.
