So you might be following my thread - FD Pettit 20B Conversion https://www.rx7club.com/build-threads-292/kilo-racing-3-rotor-fd-conversion-325733/ - in the 3rd gen section. One result of the conversion is the car now runs hotter than it used to. Steve Kan, Gotham Racing tuner, highly recommends I swap out my hood for something that is vented. Problem is I want to keep the car looking as stealth as possible and don't want to go overboard with something that will drastically alter the look of the car.

So I need your help with possible solutions to my dilemna. What hood would you recommend that will still keep the stock look of the car but vent out heat? How about keeping the stock hood and venting it? Maybe cut out a section on each side and install powder coated mesh?

Not sure about both of these. The Feed hood kind of looks like wrinkled skin to me - just don't know about it. I wonder if the Pettit hood would add too much "bling" to the car. Anyone with a pic of it installed?

 

I think stealth is the least of your worries with tires that wide in the back my friend. I would go with something completely functional so that you don't **** up all that money under the hood with some overheating issues. I would get some universal vents from Raceonusa and do what you like with them. Rivet/Mold them etc...

What about the RonKMiller mod to use the side vent for engine bay evacuation? There never was temperature data given.

Then change your oil coolers to vent in the wheel wells. Or vent the engine bay to the wheel wells. Really someone needs to use a differential pressure gauge, like early autospeed projects, and find the best low pressure area to vent. Normally the wheel wells are a low pressure area when in motion. The same should be true of the side vents providing a low pressure area when in motion.

 

try searchng for a picture of the M2 vented hood. They are very rare so finding a picture will be difficult. I used to have a pic, but cannot find it right now.

Ok, I was able to find it, here it is. I was fortunate to find one for sale a few years back and when I get a chance I'll have it painted and installed.

 

The heat that pours out of the vent above the turbo is just insane!

Thanks for the ideas. I really like the M2 vented hood. I also like the idea of aftermarket vents. Not crazy about the above cut angles but I do like the way it looks in the last pic.

I am going to install a carbon lancer evo style vent in the middle of my stock hood and leave it unpainted. It will be positioned near the outlet of the heat exchangers. The composite piece will help create a low pressure zone behind the vent to draw air out. If you want to see what it looks like on a black FD with a 99 spec front bumper just wait a few months .

 

I'm gald you like the hood. They are super rare though. One nice thing is they are quite discreet, even the small louvered side vents. From the side the louvers are pretty much flush . Another nice touch is that it is carbon fiber throughout, not just a carbon fiber shell ontop of a FG frame. Although M2 is no longer in business, they always made top notch products.

 

I have the feed hood above, and in person, it is not obvs as pictured. Really discreet hood.

Comes the closest I've seen to retaining the stock look. Not sure , given the front positioning of the vent, how great it would be at keeing temps down under the hood.

Yes. Here is an example of one installed. This vent is a little too severe looking for my taste though.

 

It doesn't appear that the custom hood vents the heat from the engine, but the IC.

 

I would go with either feed or the autox hood. If you wanna keep it stealth.
