FD front speakers
i currently have the stock bose setup, but have decided to switch out with better components.
what speaker diameter is best used in the front for an FD??
i heard 5.25" but also 6.5" ....wondering if anyone would clear up this discrepancy.
i also am wondering if i should take out the bose part in the door or leave it in. i havent looked at things yet really so maybe thats a stupid question......id still like to know before i dig in though.
thanks a ton

The bose front speakers in the door have a special box that they are in. The non-bose fronts have a bracket holding 5.25" speakers but 6.5" will also fit although some with big magnets may not (rockford fosgate).
To switch out the bose, you'll need to remove the special bose box and find the bracket from a base, PEP or R model car. This is pretty hard to find but Merciless on this forum is parting his car out so you may be in luck.
Unless you really hate the bose, I would just stick with it. To switch it out, it's going to require new amps, head unit, speakers, front and rear brackets, rear grille.
Note that base, PEP and R models have rear speakers bc they don't have the acustic mass tube. Your touring has a faux oval plastic without a bracket and speaker grille.
I think the bose is decent sounding. I wouldn't swap it. If one of the speakers in broken, I would find an used one before changing the whole system.

5.25" and 6.5" will fit within taht same bracket???
how much depth do i have exactly??
thanks for the info with merciless...ill PM him.
i dont HATE the bose, im just ripping out a lot of stuff and figure i might as well upgrade the stereo while im at it. with my new head unit the bose actually sounds a lot better so i might just leave it in.

im buying speakers......
what i DONT understand is why i would need amps....i figure in a small car like the rx7 200 watts of sound from the head through the speakers along with a powered sub (buying that too) would be plenty of volume....unless youre saying to just buy amps for a different degree of clarity that my head may not offer.
thanks for the info though......anyone else have info or advice??
feel free to chime in.....

I don't know why the different sizes both fit in, I had a stereo shop put it in and they said the six inch ones fit so I said okay. Crutchfield is a good place to find out the depth in the door and other specs. They actually told me that Rockford Fosgate didn't fit.
I think the Bose has its own amp for each speaker separate from the head unit. They run on 2 or 4 ohm I heard. To use another head unit, are you using an adapter? I heard a new head unit enhances the sound tremendously in the Bose speakers. I don't know if you need new amps or not, that all depends on how you wire things and if you plan on keeping the AM tube and still get rear speakers. Keep in mind that the front center speaker is there as well.
Maybe someone has done this conversion can offer more insight. If it sounds good, just keep it!:p

I have successfully put the 5.5 Boston Acoutics pro-series in front of my FD
AT first I thought it will never fit because the stock Bose is 4" held by the black box that hold the speaker. I have an installer cut out the hole that hold the 4" speakers and by making the the hole larger to accomodate the biiger diameter of the speakers and I also have the crossover in back of the black box. It works really great and the fitting is excellent.

Hey AA, noticed your post about your new set-up and was wondering if you could post some pics, it sounds pretty sick. Pics would be great. Thanks.

I put in 6 1/2's in the front doors and it was a bitch to modify the door panel and the mounting bracket to fit the damn speakers. There is basically no room behind the mounting panel, so mounting depth is the key.
