I put in 6.5" Sony Xplodes (component, they have an extra tweeter), I like the way they sound, I turned the volume all the way up and there was no distortion, so I assume the quality is good.

The stock non-Bose door speakers are actually shallow 6.5". The Factory Workshop Manual lists them as 6.3", but they would be sold as 6.5" speakers in the aftermarket -- they are 6.5" speakers for all intents and purposes. But they are shallow, and many aftermarket 6.5" speakers will be too deep. 2.5" depth is about the absolute max for mounting on the stock brackets (while cutting out the back), but even that is pushing it. I recommend 2.25" or less if you can find something you like with those dimensions. I used some shallow Eclipse 6.5" speakers (can't remember the model #) that mounted up just fine after I cut out the back plastic.

Look into Image Dynamics.. Not much will fit stock in the door of a FD... Right now I have some Phoenix Gold 6" Elites comps. Those BARELY fit due to depth.. The Image Dynamics are much cleaner and better, but are deeper mounting depth..

my sony xplodes fit just fine and I didn't cut anything. My car was equipped with bose system but I bought two front brackets from non-bose car and put the speakers in with no problem.
Tweeter is that small thing sticking out from the middle of some speakers, but not necessarily, you can buy them seperatly. They are usually about 1"-2" in diameter. They are used for the 'high' (pitched) sounds as opposed to base.

Constant threat
I've got Boston Acoustic components in mine, with the tweeter mounted up high for better imaging. As Maxcooper points out, the DEPTH is going to be the determining factor....don't **** yourself. Places like Crutchfield and onlinecarstereo.com are your friends.

the exact measurements for the doors on a non bose are 6" cut out diameter and 2 1/2" depth if u cut the back plastic out, i was able to fit infinity reference series 6 1/2 coax. if your having issues with depth i might suggest something like the kappa series or similar dimensions because of the material the magnets are made out of they are much smaller than most conventional speakers

On the focals depends with what serries you get. I would say if you go that way do lest the V1s they run about 250 for a set I want to say. The V2s I have are 450, but again sound great. They have some others as the K2Ps that run about 900$ and another great speaker. I was able to fit the V2s in with the stock grills.

Super thread rez! But this is the first hit on google when searching this issue so I want to update it.
TLDR: buy adapter mount boxes, fit near any 6.5in with a shallow to medium depth magnet. OEM non-bose and unmodified boxes will accept a 6.5in speaker with less than a 5.25in cutout, and less than 1 7/8” mount depth. Can cut out the back and add spacers to fit slightly bigger dimensions.
Crutchfield in 2022 lists the front Non-Bose as 5 1/4”.
I just tried out some Pioneer A series 6.5in (TS-A1677S) SO close! But not quite small enough. They fit with a small spacer /ring.. And technically fit if your OEM speaker mount has the little pegs on it.
Dimensions were 144mm cutout diameter (5.66”), and mount depth of 48mm (1.89”). if screwed in all the way to the stand-off pegs on the oem mount, the magnet just touches the backplate.
I opted to swap them for a smaller 6.5in speaker (pioneer), 5in cutout, and 1.75”depth.
All this is solved with aftermarket mounting brackets, which are relatively cheap. Can also 3D print some out.
But confirmed dimensions for the OEM mount boxes, non-Bose, non-modified/cut are as follows:
cutout hole- 5.25”, with screw holes that fit a 5.25 OR 6.5in speaker.
mount depth- right around 1.75-1.875”.
Peace

Pioneer TS-G1620F
Cut the stand-off pegs and let the speaker sit flush. Mounts perfect with mounting depth room to spare. These are Pioneer’s entry level G series, but should be fine for my needs.
Specs show 5” hole opening, 1.75” mounting depth.

I had purchased some "brackets" for the door speakers, had the bose before, but they didn't have the surround around the speaker like those. I fit some alpine perfectly, the brackets fit perfectly and no vibration or depth issues. Like $35 or something a year ago. Few different products out there, all seem to be quality work.

There are plenty of them (adapters) out there, some on Amazon rn for about 40$. The Bose box is different for sure, people ditch them and go this route ✌️
