FD Complete Audio Upgrade - Need Opionions Please
I have a 93 Toouring model. I have installed rear BASE model 1/4 panels and have the speaker brackets for them. I am going to pull out all the Bose stuff and start from scratch. I have already made up a 1.7 Cubic Foot figerglass enclosure for the spare tire well area for a 12" subwoofer. The Bose snake in the rear is gone. This is where I'm at now.
What I am thinking of putting in is 6.5" speakers in the front doors and rear panels ( will pull out the center speaker). I am not sure what brand of 6.5's to put in at this time. I want to go with the Cass/CD combo like stock but will a DD headunit like the Alpine cda-W550 fit ?? If not then I would like a unit that will fade the front speakers to rear but leave the Subwoofer alone, yet be able to turn the Sub volumn up/down. I think the W-550 would do this. Also I have looked at the alpine cda-7876 with 3 pre-outs. Maybe this hooked up to a 5 way amp, like the Alpine mrv-F-357 to the 4 - 6.5s and 12" sub. For the Sub I was looking at the MTX Thunder 8000.
So before I dive in I need some of you Experts opinion out there if you would. I will have some pics of the fiberglass box later if you want, I worked on it for over a week ( cold weather makes it sloooooow). I want to keep the project between $1500 and $2K.
Thanks, Tom

If you are gonna drive a MTX Thunder 8000 properly then that Alpine Amplifier isnt gonna do the trick. I understand your budget problems as many of us have them but the key to a nice stereo system is to start with good electronics. I have a suggestion, give me a list of products you are interested in or I could put together a nice setup for you for the price range you are looking. Email me at jdio79@hotmail.com if u are serious. Thanks. Joe

I would not install rear speakers. I would just get a pair of VERY good components or coaxials for the front. Image will sound better if it's coming from the front then the back. For some components I would recommend getting the focals 136k which are 5.25 components or a/d/s 3 series. You can find these speakers on ebay for about $3-350. The focals are very aggressive and are kinda harsh, the a/d/s are very neutral and are crispy clear. I have the a/d/s 325is 5.25 components but I haven't installed them yet. For a head unit I would recommend getting one that has a decent preamp volt output, 4 volts should be good enough, the high the better. I am also planning on getting the autotek sx4160 4 channel amp which can be bought on ebay for $249 it's very cheap and underrated. The autotek amp is up there IMO. I am going to run the first 2 channel @100watts to each side and then bridge the last too about 320@4 ohms, that should be plenty for my 10 inch sub. The plan for my system is:
1 10w3d2 subwoofer
a/d/s 5.25 components
autotek sx4160 100x4 rms @ 14.4v
A lot of RAAMmat for sound deadening
Hope this helps

My setup is just like Tony's: a component set up front, nothing in the rear and a 10" sub in the hatch. I run the whole thing with a single 4 channel amp, half of it bridged for the sub. Another plus with this is that now your fader is your sub volume control.
Got your enclosure together yet Tony?
