FC front speaker enclosures?

Hey all, I have a question, has anyone ever made enclosures for the front speakers in the fc?(the ones under the dash on the s4, not the door speakers) I have squeezed 5.25" speakers in the stock locations and I would really like to add enclosures behind them. Im hoping to get that little extra sound out of them since they are firing right at my knees. Any suggestions on what i should use, materials wise for building some? What about dimensions? Basically any ideas and critiques are welcome.

And for all of you that might think this is stupid, have you ever heard the difference between a speaker with no enclosure and one even in the smallest enclosure? It makes a big difference.

so 34 views and nothing, no one has even heard of anyone doing this? i think it would make the stereo sound much better if all of the speakers had enclosures instead of just the rear speakers.

I've never seen anyone enclose a 5.25" speaker. I understand what you are going for, but I dont think its worth the time or effort in doing so. Im more of a sub/box guy, but from what I've read midrange speakers are not meant to be enclosed. There has to be an air inlet or "baffle" to cool mids. They are not meant to be sealed up. If you want a more technical answer then I suggest you check out the forum on www.the12volt.com. Doing a search or posting your question may give you the exact reasons why. I'm just repeating what I've heard.

that makes sense, its just my 6.5s were open in the rear and it sounded like complete ***, and i enclosed them and it sounds better, not amazing but better, i have subs and an amp, but i keep those in my dd (not to mention i have a weak *** S4 alt) so it really hurts my car to keep the amp in the 7. if i were to enclose the 5.25s i could reduce the mids and such on the head unit. the head unit still sends low freq to the 5.25s even tho mine have a 72hz freq response, i could hear the 72 and up a little better. plus the response would be tighter.( basing this off of ported VS sealed sub boxes)

Its true. Obviously enclosing them will give more bass response versus a speaker that is open to all the air space in the world. Partially enclosing the speaker would work with a small amount open for air to circulate. From what I saw the guy made an enclosure with PVC around the back of the speaker and a piece of fabric across the back of the PVC. It still is open in a sense but also enclosed. This would make your mids more punchy but still efficient. I just wouldnt totally seal them in. Subs are built to take more power punishment which is why sealed enclosures work fine, but ported enclosures are more efficient because of the air flow.

Yes baffles will help slightly. One of the easiest was is to use XTC baffles. They are made of foam so they will easily conform to the space available.

On a side note if you truly want to utilize this space you should consider going from a coaxial speaker (One with the Mid & Tweeter as one) to a component set with the tweeter detached. Install a baffle such as the XTC for the mid and then locate the tweeter either on the door or say the top of the dash. This will raise the sound stage and make these speakers sound better and fuller. Simply put without all the techno babble. LOL

The FC dash location is one of the worst location as far as imaging. I would consider some kickpannels (not as easy as it sounds, since there's limited space for kickpanles) or a custom door pod.

i would love to get components or custom door panels or even custom kick panels(if i were able to still use the pedals.) its just im pretty damn broke now. right now at my disposal i have 2 pairs of 5.25"(one is installed under dash right now) 2 pair of 6.5s(again one is installed in rear towers) a pair of 4" and countless tweeters. so i was thinking i could work with what i have and if i get the urge one day(and am completely bored out of my mind) ill try to find a good place to install some tweeters up where they could actually do something.

about the xtc baffles do you think they would help get better response? these seem like more of what i was talking about and at $7 a pair thats about the price range i was looking at hahaha (since i lost my job and bills come first)

o just as i was about to post this, i just remembered i have a spare set of s5 door panels. i know the s5 panels and the s4 doors work, its just theres no cut out for the speaker on the s4 door for the s5 panel. my original idea was to have 5.25s under the dash and in the door, but i got lazy and never cut out the spot. --new goal cut out spots in door and enclose dash and door speakers!!

You would be surprised at how easy it is to make your own pods for the doors. Main issue is imaging. Putting them in the lower kick panels is about as good as you can do, but then you have to deal with foot and pedal clearance and all the wiring and the release etc. Easier to mount them in the forward center of the doors, facing slightly back and up, make a cardboard cutout shaped around the place where the console meets the door and a ring the size of the speaker monting hole, then play with it till you have a position you like. Then mock it up with some hot glue and some popsicle sticks to check for clearance and other issues, pull the door card off, see what clearance "holes etc." you have behind to work with. Subtract that distance from the height of the mock up. Now you have a workable "visual mold". use that to form up your base and shape it. Remember to make 2 of everything, and opposite, so you can make both doors at the same time.Hot glue a mounting ring of mdf on, recheck fit and adjust as needed. wrap with fleece and hotglue or staple it. Now it's just painting a few layers of resin on, sanding/bondo and paint/fabric and your done!

PS- if your looking for good tweeter mounting locations, The same A-pillar pods used for gauges make great places to mount tweeters.
