Display lights don't work on OEM units

OK, Looking for some help. I've got a 93 R1 with the stock AM/FM cassette that worked fine until a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to keep the stock look so I bought an FD CD head unit and installed it, plugging it in to the AM/FM unit using the OEM connection. The CD unit, and the AM/FM unit both work fine, even sounds OK after I upgraded the two rear speakers. The only problem is, now the display lights in the windows of both the CD and AM/FM don't work. At night, the illuminated buttons are lit up normally, but nothing in the windows where it tells you what CD track is playing etc. And the display on the AM/FM, where the clock and radio channel are typically displayed won't light up either. During the day, you can barely see the LED but it's no where near as bright as it should be. And at night, it's totally dark. Mind you, the AM/FM display worked properly before the CD was installed and both FUNCTION OK, but the display is just dark. Anyone got any suggestions. I've got the FD factory electrical trouble-shooting manual but it doesn't address my problem. It does indicate a PIN connector with a particular pin (#10) as "illum" w/ a negative sign (-) beside it. But nothing else regarding the display. Electronics are NOT friends of mine so thanks in advance for any help.

I cannot recall if the '7 has a ground or positive dimmered dash light
try to find the wire on the radio plug that is reported to be the dash light connector and unplug it
if this does work, connect a multimeter in the wire on the car and read out what values it gives out when you have lights off, on, or on dimmered

Capitan,
Appreciate the response. The illuminated buttons work on both units, and these are in conjunction with the dash lights. They also brighten and dim with adjustment for the other dash lights . The problem seems only to be with the LED display screens. I was hoping there was something simple I overlooked in all this that would explain it and that I could check. Doesn't look like that's the case and it's off to the electronics shop.

Yes I think you'd better get it to the repair shop...
