The Definitive Tan to Black FD Interior Thread:
I tested a piece with the bumper paint and it really does NOT resemble the OEM Black. It also seems to have some particles in the paint itself to make the painted surface less "smooth." Its a rough and bumpy texture when done painting.
Unfortunately, I need to have the tan plastic pieces match with the OEM Black. I had to replace some of my black pieces with tan and need the paint to match. The Duplicolor Bumper coating doesn't do this.
Anyone try anything different?
Im going to give their vinyl paint a try and see if I cant get it to at least closely match oem black.

my door panels match my dash just fine, my plastics i painted Spirit R gray style so i wasn't going for OEM on those, dunno what your doing or seeing . . .
When my surface dries, it dries with particles that are mixed with the paint. Making for a rough texture. Ill take some pictures of it later today and post them up. The color to OEM is pretty close though.
Did you use a different product on your vinyl then your plastics? Or did you use the same for both?

Be warned, these products work well on the vinyl door panels and headliner, doesn't resist scratching too well when applied to plastic. I'm actually going to be upholstering my plastics with a fabric of some sort.
So,
What did you end up using for the door panels and how well did it work/hold up? They look great but you also said the VHT stuff didn't work well. Was that just on the plastics? Were you using VHT vinyl paint or the VHT plastic paint?
Did the Duplicolor bumper paint hold up well on the plastics?
thanks

Bumper paint works great on the console plastics just have to prep good, VHT or Duplicolor Vinyl paint works good on the door panels, but not really anything else. the textured plastics of the rest of the interior don't hold paint. so I'm sanding all of them down and covering them with ultrasuede, dry carbon wrap and leather or vinyl. Will post pics when I start that.
Did my interior will post pics soon.
For my tan plastics and vinyls I used rust-o-leum brand FLAT black interior and vinyl paint. Worked great and yes the plastics dont hold the paint well but once it was all in I easily touched up the nicks and it was perfect.
For my carpet I said I wasnt going to be cheap so I searched the forums for almost a month for a black carpet and seriously $350 for a shitty one and a avg condition one $400 SERIOUSLY! Freaking thieves.
Anywho, I went and bought me automotive black carpet 72x36 and used two pieces and it came out sick.
I stripped the oem floor padding and foam off it and laid it on the new carpet so It kept its form.
I will leave the car windows closed and let it bake in the sun a couple days and the paint will be good.

I plan on doing this conversion in a month or two. But I plan on buying Seibon carbon door panels and getting the headliner and carpet from this forum.

Am I to understand that if you prep the hell out of the plastics, then wet sand to 600grit, then use adhesion promoter and the bumper spray, that the plastics still don't hold the paint well?
i did the tan to black conversion not long ago, lucky for me the 94 only have tan seats and carpet rest of panels are black.
i had my seats redone black with red stitching, and i installed one of those acc carpets, overall the carpet is a pretty decent fit with some trimming to be done and also you will need to cut the holes for the seat, seat belts and shifter and ebrake. i at first painted all the seats hard plastic covers with paint and it wasnt holding up that good.
I ended up going to dealer and buying all new plastic covers for the seats and the small trunk/fuel release cover in black.

^that looks beautiful!^ if you just had an updated steering wheel, your interior will look like its off the showroom floor! i seriously love these cars for their timeless styling
I didnt like the idea of redoing this sanding/peeling process a few years downt the line so I decided to take it all of while I was motivated and painted w/ the dupicolor flex bumper paint:

I think it turned out great but this is mostly for comparison purposes for club viewers. The plastidip turns out a bit shinier than the dupicolor paint.
Also added a pic of the peeling process
