Decisions Decisions...What Subs?
Ok, as some of you may know, I just finished designing a custom box for my 1st gen. Well the subs and amp that I was supposed to get cheap fell though, so now I have this box with nothing in it. Im not to "up" on what brands are good and whats not, so how about you throw a few suggestions out there. For those you want to recommend a specific sub model, my box is desigend to be sealed (easily fixed to ported I suppose) with a volume of 0.72 cubic feet. Also, my amp compartment was built at 14x11x4 (I think, I honestly cant remember) so if you wanna help, PLEASE FEEL FREE .

PS - SQ is good, but I really kinda like SPL A good balance would be nice...

Gordon,
I just installed one 10w3 in my friends eclipse. He was powering it with a crappy Rockford Fosgate amp. I do have to say it sounded really good. I was very impressed. I have had a 10w6 in my 7 for about 3 years and I do have to say this sub comes very close to the w6. The sub is very tight and punchy. My w6 pumps a little more bass but I would have to say that the w3 is a very good buy for the money. It also requires a lot less power than the w6.
RotorMotorDriver,
I would recomend the w3, it is a great sub for the price consious, that don't want to sacrifice sound.
If I where you, you first need to figure out what you want and what your budget is. There are a lot better subs for a lot more money, or you can get a w0 for pretty cheap but it wont sound nearly as good as the w3. As far as amps go, I would recomend the older power series PPI amps, or biskit style rockford fogaste. (those are the ones that still cost more than the new RF amps)

The W6s should sound better than the W3s but the W3s should walk away from the W6s on SPL. If not then you are not putting enough power to them. JL SEVERILY underrates their subs. I've seen 400 W RMS on a 10W6 for years of playing and I've seen the same on a 10W3 for years. The ratings are 300 W RMS for the 10W6 and 250 W RMS for the 10W3. I don't think JL wanted to undercut their W6 line at the time the W3s came out. I'll tell you another a single 10W7 will eat THREE 10W3s ... that is just for reference. I'm already planning on punting my "sound quality" Bostons because the 10W7 is incrediable.

I've heard the w7 and i wasn't too impressed. I don't think it lived up to all the hype. I think there are better subs for the money, but thats just my $.02. Personally i think 3 w3's of the smae size with the same power, sound MUCH better than a single w7. But it comes down to personal preference

Hey Spyfish007, I'm considering a 10W7. Can you tell me if either one of these configuration will work for driving it?
Phoenix Gold Ti500.4 rear channel bridged
or
Precision Power PCX-4125 rear channel bridged
Musically, which amp sounds better (for fronts)?
Sorry, a bit off topic.

I'd go with the Phoenix Gold 500.4 for sound quality and features. It has 24 db/octave filter and low pass level (LPL) control via remote so you can cotrol the bass. Add a Bass cube and you'll be rocking.
Don't forget to look into a JL 500.5 amp for a similar setup ... maybe even better!

Persona non grata
RotorMotorDriver - I would checkout a Directed CompX. They're work in such small boxes that even a 12" would perform in .72 cu/ft. Give that thing about 500 watts and hold on The CompX has good SQ, but it's built as an SPL sub. I would also checkout the Audiomobile EVO. Their 10" would work well in that box - those subs are amazing.
