Custom sub enclosure. Tell me what you think.

I had this idea a while ago and finally got some pictures of it. It would be a direct replacement for the divider panel behind the seats above the storage bins. You can fit anything up to 2, 12" subs, or basically any set up you would want, single or double, flat or angled. I hadn't seen it done before so I figured I'd try. This is a rough copy and has not been totally completed (trimming edges). They are fiberglass and would be painted to match the exterior color. What do you think?

Yes it does need to be enclosed. If you mount them backwards it's already air tight. Or to mount them into the panel forwards I think I will make a sealed box that extends from the back. Nothing huge, maybe 6 inches or so.

Do you know what the interior volume is? Make sure the subs you install will be matched to the enclosure.

I don't know what the interior volume is, I'm not a big fan of math. I just shaped it the way I liked it. Anyone know the formula to figure out the volume?

You NEED to know the internal volume of the enclosure. Improperly matched subs will not sound right.

Alright thanks. If the subs are mounted backwards would I need the same internal volume?

This makes no sense, but regardless of which way the subs are mounted, the answer is yes.

some people mount their subs with the magnets facing out. most people do it for show, but sometimes with the right configuration it sounds good.

I understood what he said, but doing so makes no sense. Why would you point two 12" subs toward the cockpit of the car, 2' from the driver (and passenger)?

Yes you will need the same volume if the subs are mounted face-in, but with the same enclosure you will actually gain more internal volume by doing this.... normally mounted subs take up space in the box, you need to subtract the air space taken up by the volume of the cone, frame and magnet, but mounting the sub face -in you do not need to subtract these figures because there is nothing protruding into the box....you actually would add the internal volume of the cones to the volume of the box, resulting in even more cubic feet.

I was thinking about doing something like yours rotarynemesis. Not sure though. Did you use the stock divider as well?

Do you have any pics from the rear? I'm not sure how I want to extend/seal the back of mine. That looks great.

If you want an easy way to find out the internal volume, cover one of the sub openings with some paper (tape it on) and then fill it with rice. Measure the amount of rice used with a jug to find out how large it is.

And as a tip, filling it with wadding fools the subs into thinking the volume is 1/3 bigger

ie: a 10L box with wadding becomes effectively a 13L box

Its the stock divider and they are alpine 12s

The only thing that rattles are the clips on top so I am going to remove them and then attach the divider with with brackets from the back.

Its just a basic enclosure and I am not sure of the size. My battery is also inside the box inbetween the sub magnets.

It sounds good but I will do a little reworking to make it the best it can be.

By wadding I'm assuming you mean polyfill (The stuff you can get at any cloth store/Walmart), and it depends on the amount you put in there. And its still not going to make up for having too small a box.

Dayumn! i wanted to do that exact same setup. Do you have any blueprints for it? I wanted to make a fiberglass box that I could still clip in and remove it. Does the rear strut bar get in the way; it seemed like it would so I kinda forgot about it. How much that cost you? Im about to get a system in my car and need ideas

infinatebass, you use just enough to fill the box, but don't force in more just because you can - otherwise the effective box size will be SMALLER

This is a trick I have to use frequently, as I deal with ICE in classic minis, and you don't get much in the way of space for subs in these
