Custom door pods have begun

Well, after deciding to keep my components that wouldn't fit in the door, I've decided to go ahead and make a project out of it. I have been working the past two days on making/fiberglassing door pods for my FD doors. This is my first time doing anything like this, so I don't expect it to be the best, but I'm not in a rush to finish it as I'm going to try and make it look as good as I can. Go ahead and check out my progress here on pages 8 and 9. Let me know your thoughts so far.

That's a good idea using the stock ring and building the pod from that...I would have gone old school and far too involved: "ok...lets build a new panel!" Looking forward to seeing the project!

what speakers are you using that won't fit...I just put 6.5" alpine type r's in the doors...which are a pretty good size speaker and magnet. They came witha 1/4" mounting/spacer ring...and i used a couple small washers on each screw and it spaced it just enough to clear the windows. Good job on the pods.

Yeh, I'm taking my time on it. Basically, I can only work on it on the weekends because of school, and even then, it's only a couple of hours because of the girlfriend lol.

I was able to work on it a little today to clean up the resin/fiberglass and sanded down/cut the excess. I need to be able to sand down the resin/fiberglass that got on the stock grille because it won't hook into the door anymore, so that'll probably take the most time. After that, I then need to bondo and sand in able to get a good smooth surface and then I'm going to prime/spray black in order to match the interior.

Hopefully everything turns out good, we'll see.

Custom door pods for FD are finished!

The story behind this was I was about to return these speakers because they would not fit in the FD doors. Had a mounting depth of 2.8 but I decided to make door pods. After a long time it seemed, my first fiberglass project is almost over! Just need to install the tweeters now. Pictures and description can be found at http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2208485/11

Building pictures can be found on previous pages, tell me what you think!

Why not put the finished product pics of this project in the same thread you had already started? Makes it easy for people to find and doesn't scatter info everywhere.

Here, I'll do it for you.

Looking nice Brian. What else have you done to the car?

Wanna sell it back to me in a few years? I have something heinous planned.

Looks like they arent flush with the door panel the whole way around. It looks like there is about 1/4" gap where you can see between the door panel the pod or is this just a test fit and not the final product? Are they part of the door panel now or bolted/screwed into the actual door? If they are part of the door panel how much weight did they add, and if they are part of the door itself now why? Are they too heavy to mount of the panel. Most speakers only need a 1/2" -3/4 inch to fit, any reason why you raised them so far out of the door?

Jason, that's all I've done to the car. I have a sub/amp coming in soon and I'm going to be working on that. I have all of my audio squared away after the install of the sub/amp and I will then move onto either performance or exterior looks (wheels/front bumper/skirts) Keep a look at my cardomain page, everything will be kept up to date there

teamafx, there is a little fitment issues but it is not noticable in person. What I did was I took the stock grill frame and molded the pod onto that frame so it just pops into the door panel like the stock grill would. I didn't want to have to screw into the door panel and mess them up so this is why I molded it onto the stock grill.

The speakers are out so far because of the way the doors are curved and everything. If I didn't move the speakers out that far, they would have been angled down even more than they are. They might look like they stick out a lot, but that do not interfere with anything or makes anything cramped. There is plenty of room for me and the passenger side.

I just finished up installing the tweeters in the door and everything sounds good and looks stock. I have pictures taken and I will upload them later tonight after I resize them.

Thanks for all the compliments, I'll be doing my sub/amp install whenever they get here and I have the time so I'll keep you guys updated.

I think that a custom pod that screwed into the stock location is a way to go, you can get the extra 1/4 inch and not interfere with the stock door panel. No gaps and no fitment issues that way. Also Id say any decent speaker with real weight on it is going to make that panel a little heavy and will eventually distort the shape of the door panel over time. Its a good effort, just not the way I would have or have done in the past

Yeh, I don't know, I think it's pretty stable, it doesn't really put any kind of stress on the door panels so it's fine for me. Not like I'm going for the perfect look, plus it's my first time every doing anything like this.

Anyways, I installed the tweeters today and the front stage of the system is finally done. I have two 10W7's coming in next week, but I'm only going to use one and sell the other. I also have an amp coming in next week so I'll have my low end ready, just need to figure out what kind of setup I'm going to do in the trunk. Any suggestions?

Until then, here is pictures of the doors finally complete! Oh, it sounds sweet at all volumes, no distortion and very very clear!

P.S. I gotta wash/detail the car inside and out. Since I start the project I haven't washed since and it's been raining. The inside is especially dirty and the door panels seem faded, so I need to clean them.

If all you did was hang the pods on the door panels they are going to rattle like crazy when music is playing. You need the pod mounted as solidly as possible to the door structure itself.

If whatever the speaker is mounted to can move or vibrate at all you can be certain it will.

The pods do not rattle or anything going over bumps or closing the doors.

When the speakers are on full blast, there is no rattling on the pod or their door panels.
