Question Carbon Fiber Autometer Gauges?

Does anyone have any experiences with using these?

I'm not a huge fan of cosmetic carbon fiber. In fact, I find it a bit tacky. But...I like that Autometer isn't charging triple the price for gauges, they match the interior FD lighting, and they have black faces.

I'd get the pro-comp or ultra-lite gauges from them but the pro-comps don't come in 2 1/16" trim and the ultra-lites don't come in black. I'd prefer not to get the sport-comps. The CF line is also ultra-lite. Why can't autometer just make them in black and white, thanks.

Anyway, what I want to know is...

1. How flashy are the CF gauges? If they're over the top, I'm not gonna want them. The rest of my interior is stock.

2. How's the readability on the gauges (compared to stock or other autometer gauges)? The needle is silver, so it looks like its a little harder to pick out than the usual red needle.

3. Is the lighting the same as other autometer gauges (e.g. matches stock)?

Thanks to anyone who can shed light on my situation. Pics are much appreciated.

-E

For really fine looking and affordable black faced gauges check out the Vision line from VDO. Got mine from Summit and they look great; very classy. Red needle and lighting matches stock.

Thanks Damon,

I've been looking at the VDOs, but haven't found an oil temp gauge or oil pressure gauge from them.

Doesn't mean they aren't out there though (I'm sure they probably are).

Lemme know if you know where to get 'em,

According to www.vdona.com the Vision series oil temp is:

300°F, VDO Ohm range, “Oil” 310 106

oil pressure is:

80 PSI, 10-180 Ohms (VDO), “Oil” 350 104
80 PSI, 240-33 Ohms (U.S.), “Oil” 350 105
100 PSI, 10-180 Ohms (VDO), “Oil” 350 106
100 PSI, 240-33 Ohms (U.S.), “Oil” 350 107
150 PSI, 10-180 Ohms (VDO), “Oil” 350 108
150 PSI, 240-33 Ohms (U.S.), “Oil” 350 109
400 PSI, 10-180 Ohms (VDO), “Trans PSI” 350 110

If Summit does not have them I am sure they could get them. Give 'em a buzz.

Arrgggh!

I read up on the VDOs, look at 'em, e-mail Summit to get pricing and availability on the other gauges, and...no A/F meter. Dammit!

I want A/F, boost (replacing old Autometer Sport-Comp), Oil Temp. and Water Temp.

VDO can't give me the A/F
Autometer can't give me a high-end black-face gauge at 2 1/16".
I'm not paying close to $200 per gauge for some of the other brand-name gauges.

Grrrr.

Thanks for the tips on the VDO Damon. I'll either skip on the A/F and get the VDOs, or just end up going with all Sport-Comps from Autometer I guess.

p.s. Chiminoid, I'd love to see a few snapshots of the CF gauges if you have the time. I can't imagine that they'd be to my taste, but you never know.

www.egauges.com has the entire VDO Vision series with good prices. I will probably add the oil temp later myself.

I just bought a new AutoMeter dual gauge pod that says 2" on the front. Will the autometer CF boost and water temp gauges fit this pod?

I went to the site and it says the cf gauges are 2 1/16" Do I need to shave my pod to make these fit?

Thanks.

I have the CF Boost and A/F...i'll post up pics once I get my car back.

Evil,
You might have to shave off just a little bit but it should not be a problem. A five minute job at most.

Hey thanks. Could I shave the gauge pod with sandpaper for "fine" fitting or are there other tools that I'm suppose to use to shave it?
