Car Stereo: Motorized face or not?

So then like I'm sorta torn between getting a new HU that either has a motorized face plate or is a fixed face plate, but either one detachable. I've heard some stories that the motorized ones COULD tend to get a lil janky after a while... Any experience with motorized faces?

I have the Alpine CDA-7897. Zero reliability issues. There's no faceplate to carry around and watching the faceplate come out, rotate, and light up is VERY trick.

I have the JVC KDSH909 and it's got a motorized face as well. I've had it for about 2 years and it's been pretty good. No problems with it yet though.

I installed one of the first motorized Kenwood models YEARS ago in another car and it never gave me problems. It wasn't quite like the retracting Alpine above, the screen just flipped a 180. It was cool when it was new, and thieves probably mistook them for ashtrays... now everyone's got 'em. I guess its for impressing chicks...

@evilpenevil

Had installed a Kenwood KRC-777 years ago in my FC Turbo II convertible...without ANY problems.

Go for it, even though thieves know them meanwhile.

cheers

As many years roll on, you might eventually have problems because this is still a moving part, but even if that is the case, worst case scenario you could remove the motor and / or transport assembly, and make the unit a fixed face.
If you take care of the unit, you can easily get several years from the deck anyway before the mechanism gets "sticky".
