car paint

what do you think is a reasonable price to get the front bumper painted? so far i've heard $400 and $450, but that seems like way too much for such a little part. If i can't find anything for $200 or less i would like to buy a front bumper for a 89 rx-7 gxl (black) that is in pretty good condition.

thanks,
kevin

A good paint job requires a LOT of work, thats why its so expensive. You get what you pay for when it comes to paint jobs, big time. Theres a lot of prep work; bumper comes off, old paint has to be striped, imperfections fixed, primed, painted, sanded, painted, sanded, painted... and so on.
Or you can take it to Earl Scheib or Maaco and have them not do any prep work and paint over the old paint when its still on your car and have it come off in a year. They also like to paint over tires, lights and anything else thats in the way..... but you saved money!

I saw an FD ruined like that. Its best to get a quality paint job, its somthing that your going to have to live with for a while!

Porsche - Have you tried the Parts For Sale section of the forum? There is probably a black bumper there for 200 or less. I can't imagine that someone would charge you more than 200 dollars to paint just the bumpers.. Painting is VERY labor intensive, though.. I know i just got done with a 6 month paint job on my car, but still, it's just the bumper, that was one of the easiest parts to paint. See how much they'd charge you if you did all the prep work (sanding it down, Fiberglass if/where nessicary, etc), i'll bet that will cut it down a lot.

damn thats a lot of money for just the bumpers.. ive been wondering about prices as well. i want to strip my old red paint and paint her black, any estimates on what this would cost? the alternative is to paint it myself. i have access to a paint booth and gun, but i have absolutely no experience. would just reading a couple books and trying it out suffice?

well i've shopped around. i've heard $460 and they need the car for 2-3 days or i can bring the bumper in and it will be $260. another place said $415 and another said they recommend masking it off and spraying it they would only need it for a day and it would be $215. Every other place said they needed to take it off.

pull the bumper off yourself and take it to a shop. that way you dont have to worry about lights and whatnot.
