Can't paint an r1/r2 stock spoiler?

I got a call from my body shop today. I had bought the stock spoiler (the best looking imho compared to 99, on a stock 93-95 front clip) and it arrived and they painted it.

Well he then tells me it won't be as glossy as the rest of the car. I ask why. He says, well it is plastic, and isn't really the same as the car when they paint it. It will be more dull but hardly noticeable he says. I say, "How much to put a gloss on there to match?" He says, "Well, you really can't. You might have better luck with an aftermarket spoiler that would be ready for paint." Sounds like total crap to me. I have seen many painted spoilers, and they look like the stock paint to me. And this place is world renown in Austin, and not cheap.

Any opinions?

Thanks,
Joseph

The lip is coated with a textured finish, I doubt it will look as glossy as on the metal panels of the car. The only reason they are bringing it up is probably the fact that they ARE a good body shop.

I wouldn't paint the lip anyway, leave it the natural finish. You're going to scrape all the paint off it anyway in normal driving.

I wouldn't paint it, either.

But if you REALLY need to get it painted, the right way to do it is to add flex agent to the paint. This is how factory urethane bumpers are painted and why that paint is so flexible. This is also the reason why an aftermarket spray job will begin to crack on a flexible body part if the flex agent isn't added. I forgot the exact name of the chemical, but it allows the paint to dry and still be flexible.

yup, I agree dont paint it, and yes the body shop is correct it will not match, I have to see one that is painted and matches the rest of the car..

you will regret painting it when the paint starts chipping and it will look like crap, IMHO

but do it if you want to, this is just free advice..

Thanks. I just like the look of lips that are painted. It is already painted so advice a little late. But it wasn't that expensive. 188 shipped so I can get another one if it looks bad a year from now.

Thanks All,
Joseph
