Black primer

Ive doing some body work on my rx7 and prepping it for paint. I dont think I'm going to strip the whole thing down to metal. Should I still primer the whole car or just do the spots of metal showing? Whats a good primer to use out of a gun and how much is that stuff usually? Ive got a paint gun and a big compressor at my house.

i dont think you ever have to take it down to the metal on a whole car unless its stolen and youre doing a good job covering it up. someone has been doing their car. look for the "project: paint the 7" thread.

i never understood that saying. if i was driving a stolen car, i'd be doing the speed limit to the notch. unless i were being chased...

Casio Is right.. That thread will answer all questions except for the title.. the thread is here: https://www.rx7club.com//showthread....hreadid=315662

As for the title answer: You should ALWAYS use a primer of a different color than your basecoat. According to a few local paintshop guys, VERY RARE is the person who can paint black topcoat on black primer. 99% of thier customers have to sand it all down and redo the job in grey primer.. In fact, most wont' even sell black primer to black topcoat guys, without specific reason.

I've sprayed black primer then black basecoat it's not to tuff. I've also done the same with white primer and white basecoat. The dupont mixing system I was using had you mix primer as close to the base as possible. This is so you have little bleading and less paint is required to cover. Also if you get a scratch or chip that does not break the primer they are not as noticeable.
