Better audio quality w/o hatch.
I discovered a few minutes ago (had to unload some stuff from my car) that the quality of my speakers is INCREDIBLY improved when I have the hatch open.
(1989 GTU.) With the hatch down everything echoe's around the inside of the car, giving a tinny quality, but with the hatch up the sound is more dampened (in a good way, the highs and mids sound more natural and the bass is twice as noticeable.)
Is there any way to get that effect short of driving around with my hatch wide open? I don't think there is, kind of depressing but hopefully when I get my door speakers wired correctly the sound in the car will be better. Right now just the rear speakers are up so it's all deflecting off of the hatch window.

heres the problem, its called sound staging. basically, its like a stage, and depending on where the sound is coming from, will determine the quality. the speakers pointing right at the hatch is the worst sound stage. when you get the sound wave, it has already bounced off of 2 surfaces, diluting and muffling the sound, and sounds shitty. i have found that with some proper aiming, you can get the sound stage in the 7 to be decent. it will never be a dolby 5.1 surround level, but better than stock.
take where your spare sits and test out some 6x9" speakers, maybe make a box. then with the doors, find a way to aim the speakers toward the driver.
there are about 10000000 different ways to do this. good luck

Hm.
I have two 6" alpne's in the back speaker tubs right now, resettling them into the rear pointing towards the seats sounds like it would be a fun project though, and simple enough. I think I'll just get something in (not quite) a wedge shape.
I'll drew it up using paint, I'll post it in a few minutes though, my internet's being rotten at the moment.
