Audio upgrade time but confused

I've been planning out my upgrade and I've got most parts sorted out, except this one part.

I read through the 2nd gen FAQ and and they gave me 4" for the front speakers under my dash. Well, I'm assuming that's what the FAQ meant by dash. Crutchfield is telling me 5.25". My own measurements on the stock speaker are ~5" or ~5.75" depending if it was measuring across the speaker or mounting hole to mounting hole, and the mounting hole was like ~4.75". My personal measurements could be a little off as I did this between classes today and didn't have anything to write it down, but they were definitely not what the FAQ and Crutchfield said, and I put it all back together so I could at least listen to it on the 30 minute drive home.

I'm wanting to put a pair of Infinity 5032cf's up front and 6032cf's in back, but all these damn numbers have me confused, and I haven't even looked at the back, and I don't want to buy a set that won't fit. I was wondering if anybody has put these specific ones in, don't care if you only did one or the other, and did they fit? If not what modifications were needed?

Edit: I just realized I've been pressing front door on Crutchfield's site on the outfit my car part, mainly because I thought the dash part was some 5th speaker or so in the top center of the dash like my old Crown Vic had. Should I be looking under "dash" or am I correct in assuming Crutchfield just took the simple way out and marked it as "front door" like the rears are "side panel"

If you have a 88 GXL like you name says, you're in for an even bigger headache when it comes to the speakers. GXL models came with an amplified speaker system with 3 amps, one to run the front dash speakers and one each for the rear strut tower speakers. The rear speakers have the amps built into their 'buckets' and are easy to bypass.

The front speakers are run by an amp box which contains the passenger side speaker. The driver's side speaker's signal wires go to the amp box first, then back across the dashboard to the driver's side speaker. Unfortunately, the passenger side dash speaker is integrated into the amp box. To make sure that you have the factory amplified system, remove the lower dash panel on the passenger side. If you see a long, black box attached to it, you have the factory amp system.

To do the retrofit correctly on a factory amp'ed car, you'll need to find a lower dash panel from a car that didn't have the amplified speaker option, such as a base model. Then you'll be able to use the same speaker for both driver and passenger side. As for wiring, it shouldn't be too hard to jumper the signal wires from the stereo to the outputs that were on the factory amp. Consult the FSM's wiring diagram for more details.

I do have an '88 GXL and I had planned on running whole new wires and pulling out the factory amps, if possible, when I do the install as I'm going to have a 4-channel amp. Right now I'm just wanting to know fitment for those speakers. I should have stated this originally but it was late and I was tired.

The dash speakers are indeed 4" speakers, however crutchield is right in also telling you that there were optional door speakers as well, mostly in S5's but can be retrofitted into S4's easily enough.

Well damn, now I need to get me some S5 doors as part of my audio install haha... maybe down the road for that. I just want the four I have to sound better now. Also, why does the FAQ say 4" or 6" for the rear towers? I'm assuming vert/coupe or model dependant, if so what is my S4 GXL, I also assume that since the GXL is the loaded model it will be 6"?

Huh? Like an adapter for smaller speakers, like Crutchfield has? I haven't dug into the back yet so it's probably something simple I would understand when I look at it and feel stupid for not understanding it.

Its kinda like an adapter, imagine a deep plate with a hole in it. Face up bigger speakers fit face down smaller fit

BettsySlevin, it's stickied at the top of the Second Gen forum, but I'll be nice and paste the link seeing as I already have it open in another tab. Here it is. I'm trying for some 6.5"s in the back for me.

schaft, I get ya, like a height adapter that was for the back of my old '00 Regal.

I think I'm going to try some Infinity 4" 4032cf's up front and 6.5" 6032cf's, which only measure 5" for the basket and 6.25" across the "rim", in the back all running through a Kenwood 8045 4-channel and a 9105D for my two 12s with the tunes coming from a JVC Arsenal KD-AHD79 headunit, when I get my student loan money the 15th and after I get this Taurus alt swap finished so I have enough power. I'll post back here when I get that all done and tell ya how it went.

Ordered the 4032cf's and 6032cf's Sunday, will update again when I get them, eta Friday, and if I can find my camera I will be doing a guide with pictures.

P.S. For anyone interested in both these pairs of speakers, Crutchfield has them for ~$100 a pair but Amazon has them for ~$50 a pair, which I'm glad I looked around. I guess what they say about 2nd gen owner's being cheap is true lol...
