Anyone know of Recaro RZ knock-offs?

I posted in interior section... but no replies... & since these seats were OEM for 3rd gens...

Does anyone know of a knock-off brand for these Recaro RZ (I think they are called RZ) seats (the ones in the pic). $3000+ for 2 seats is a bit much for me for the real things (from FDNewbie Imports)... & my seats are in need of replacing. So any knock-offs or a seat that is a similar style will do. All black & should look stock (or close to it).

Search for Recaro SPG , I've heard they fit, and can be found for less than $1000/each in fiberglass (CF & kevlar is expensive).

Be warned, very few aftermarket seats fit this car, most are too wide. Also, be aware that most aftermarket sliders are pretty crappy compared to stock. The ones that FDNewbie is selling were original equipment in certain RX-7s (probably the RZ model), so they'll fit perfectly and have nice sliders with a smooth action.

Aren't the SPGs the ones with the large bulges to the left & right of your head (suppose to keep your head from going side to side... but look like horse-blinders...)?

Be careful running cheap seats in your FD----I've seen some that aren't safety tested and it's obvious, they look like in the event of an accident they'd crumple up like they were made of cardboard.

You might want to check into these:

Sparco doesnt even list the SPG on their USA website.....I've seen versions of the SPG with the side head restraints and without.

^^ Good find. Any experience with them? Do you know they good & fit right, or did you just find a seat that looks stock?

I ended up finding some pristine low mileage R2 seats which I purchased.

If you perform a search here on the forum, you'll find some info. A member in PA has them installed and posted pics and his opinion of them.

First off, it's REALLY annoying that you made a new thread when I moved your first one to the proper place.....

Anyway, get quality seats.

Recaro SPG (can use Bride sliders): http://www.speedwaremotorsports.com/...rofi_spg04.asp

Bride: http://www.tees-usa.com/products.html

And if you can't rock that much money, just pick up a pair of used stock seats for $400-500. At least they'll be safe and not look like cheap EBAY ****.

I know it got moved... BUT IT DIDN'T GET ANY REPLIES...

Since the seats are 3rd gen specific... I post here... & got replies...

What good is it to move a thread to the 'proper' place when it gets ignored? I posted here... & found out about the Memory Fab seats.... which look good & are more affordable...

If anyone wants the thread with installed pics...

the Proracer-SPG is the one you are talking about, with the heltmet shaped head piece/restraint.

I'd reccomend the Bride Artis III. Get the Japanese Navigator, which has a smaller left shoulder, and mount it on the driver side of your US spec FD. it will clear the inner door plastic. Mine did anyhow (we all know that what works on one FD is not true to another).

One thing you never wanna skimp on is safety. That includes mounting points of harnesses, quality of seats, etc etc. Seats. . . your body is in that shell, the last thing you want is fiberglass fracturing or splinting into your spine in a collision or off-track issue. . . Remember, this is your life we are talking about. If you wanna skimp, choose it elsewhere. you can always replace a motor. It's hard finding a rebuild kit for your pulse.

there's also a pretty large thread in the interior/exterior section of the forum that Rynberg and a mass of other people posted in with dimensions of seats and what not. it was there where I ended up going with the Bride's over the Recaro's. Seek it out, it has a wealth of info in it.

I understand you don't want cheap "eBay" seats... but I also don't want the most expensive seats either... there should be a middle ground where the seat is as safe as OEM & not $3000+

Bride and Recaros are $700-900 each. The Corbeau CR-1 is $400 each (you'll have to come up with your own rails though). Used OEM seats in good condition are $250 each.

As safe as OEM?

Think about how many of these seat companies ACTUALLY TEST their seats. Then, compare that w/ the "knockoff" designs that you find on Ebay.

Personally, I don't think any company that is willing to knock off a design such as Recaro, Sparco, or Bride will actually test their seats in a crash test. (Please note, I'm referring to exactly the same seats as a comparison...such as carbon kevlar seats. It is unfair to compare a seat w/ a metal base, compared to composite).

The ONLY name I truly trust w/ seats is Recaro.
A close runner up would be Sparco and Bride.

Now, if you want to include metal base (steel framed) seats, then you can consider other brands such as Cobra, Corbeau.

Please keep in mind, I'm referring solely to seat manufacturers and not seats licensed for a company (such as OMP and their racing seat).

So in short, start looking at other brand names, such as Cobra and Corbeau. They will probably be at the price point that you want.

Of course,...you can always start your own racing seat company, seeing as you see a void.

I remember Status from awhile back, from a look perspective I find they look really "JDM-Style Yo!" because of the status symbol on the headrest section.

Ones that were a little nicer were these so called "F1 Spec". I remember they started posting about their seats, heavy posting then it disappeared.... Maybe they realized non of their seats fit... I don't remember.

To the original poster, you said you don't want to fork out that much dough for seats well then just don't go for cr or cf/kevlar versions.

Most Recaro and Sparco seats are FIA certified, and I think Cobras are as well. I'm not sure about Bride. I wouldn't buy a seat that's not FIA certified. (The FIA is the sanctioning body for WRC, among other race classes. I'm pretty sure they sanction Formula 1 also).

Another thing to consider are seat belts / race harnesses. Be sure you can use your OEM seat belts, or else get some harnesses that you'll actually wear every time you drive. A respected member of the SoCal rotary scene died last week, and it's partly because he skimped on safety equipment.

Back in the day (2 years ago) I was considering looking into these @ 450 USD each. But then after being around for awhile I was more like "450 USD and made from carbon/kevlar? I will stick with stock".

I had seen then at Intense Motorsports www.i-m-racing.com
