Anyone ever put in a Carputer?

I have been thinking about this for a while. I want to put a carputer in my FD. Anyone ever try this? What brands did you use and where did you get your stuff? I would really like to use it for my radio, cds, sirius, navigation, maybe internet, and my Apexi FC. Any ideas?

check www.mp3car.com if you haven't. you can make the carputer as you like to do whatever you want it to do. all you need is to plan it correctly.

My brother did a carputer in his Audi A4. He heads down toward Richmond now and again, if you want I can give you his contact info.

He did the thing from top to bottom: MP3s, GPS, internet, etc.

How much was the mini mac and what kind of options do you plan on hooking to it? By that I mean radio, nav, sat. radio....

Hit me up with his info so I can give him mine. I would like to talk to him about what he bought and how he is doing it.

i plan on doing the full works. cd/dvd, ipod intergration (duh, its a mac ) satiliete radio (maybe get a tuner but i doubt it) gps navigation and mapping software, wifi, and over time im going to work on a commander software for the PFC with some help from a few people i know with the expertise.

the mac mini runs about $500 (depends on which you choose) + $200-400 for a touch screen, 80$ for the gps reciever, and whatever satiliette radio you choose. plus the nick nacks like a bluetooth keyboard or somethin you wanna throw behind the seat, and cabling. whatever you can do with a regular computer you can do with it. and the mac mini is onli 6" by 6" big!

should be a fun project. i eventually want to control the entire car with it (windows, heat, a/c, fans, engine manaement along with the commander software) but baby steps must be taken first.

I am about to do this for the purpose of being able to run the GEEZ! plot software and Datalogit.

The only thing with carputers is the problem with AM/FM integration. You would think something this simple could be easily integrated but it doesn't seem so (been surfing the MP3car forum).

Also, startup/shut down can be an issue to that you need to plan for when building your computer.

The infill all in one is finally available. It takes care of all the problems as it is all integrated. Cost alot but seems to work fine. The only thing for me is I like the pictures of people who molded it into the 2 DIN slots. I'm not sure if I like the flip up in the FD.

i dont know about other platforms but i know you can buy a 20$ cable adapter for the mini mac that puts it to sleep when the car goes off and turns it on when the car goes on.

Sounds like it is going to be a great package.

I do not completly agree with that. Using a carputer is a great way to integrate your music, navigation, and engine diagnostics.

Maybe I am stupid, but how do you hook your speakers to your carputer? I have a lap top that is about 18 months old with a broken screen. I am thinking about using it for my carputer.

anyone ever used this or something similar. It is a FM tuner that slides into a PCI slot on your laptop. Its $40.00 so I am thinking about buying it. I still havent purchases a screen yet. I want to make sure I know what I am doing before I throw money at it. Any thoughts?
