any paint experts? read this....

To make a long story short, I just moved to California last month and had my car shipped here with a trucking company called "All American Carriers". When my car arrived in California, the spoiler was badly cracked and flopping around, and the paint under the fuel door was wrinkled up. My question is why would the paint under the fuel door be wrinkled? The driver claims my car has a fuel leak and the fuel leaked out of the gas cap and ran down and damaged the paint. I had the car checked out, by local shop and there is no fuel leak. I was thinking that gasoline damaged the paint?? Ive spiled gasoline numerous times when filling up and this has never happend before. Anyway im filing a lawsuit against the company. My question.. can gasoline damage paint, or what do you think REALLY happened here? who knows if its even gasoline that did it?

gasoline can damage paint over time, but more than likely it was a fuel additive that did it.

Or, if it was on those double decker type carriers, brake fluid could have leaked down on it from the car above.

+1 to that. gasoline will not ruin a good paint job. now if the quarter panel was recently painted with shitty quality paint its possible but not likely. i mean people always spill gas on there car and i have never in all my years at a bodyshop seen damaged paint from spilling gas on the paint at the fuel door. but brake fluid leaking from a car above would wrinkle the paint in a matter of hours. why the hell would gas leak out of your cap? what a bs response. i work for the manheim auto auction at a bodyshop and i seriously fix cars everyday that have been damage due to shipment on a car carrier. those guys dont give a **** man there hard on the vehicles they haul. can you post a pic of the damage? that would help alot.

+1 for brake fluid... depending on how long it took them to transport your car it could have been sitting on there for any number of days.

holy ****! it took something wicked to do that. deff not gas. it seems like to much of a coincidence that brake fluid would only spill right where the gas goes in so im thinking it may have been from an additive you put in?

damn bro thats some nasty paint damage. as far as the dripping fluid from another car on the carrier - if that was the case then why would the previous owner say it was something else? def. looks like brake fluid damage tho.

well the good news is, after months of paperwork and preperation, I actually took the company to court. They did NOT show up in court, and after the judge reviewed my case, I won! and I got the FULL amount I asked for, so this damage wil be taken care of, and im not paying a dime for anything, thank God!

Glad to hear. Did you win enough to get a new paint job?

I didn't win enough to get a new paint job just enough to sand and repaint the whole rear end of the car including the roof, and replace the spoiler with a BRAND NEW one, and new mounting bolts. I don't really need a new paint job being that I already had the entire car repainted last year in November( the paint was sanded down to almost the bare metal frame and it took 2 weeks for the sanding alone, and the 3rd week was for the painting, drying and buffing) for only $1,500)Unlike Macco...1 day for sanding, 1 day for painting, and a thrid day for "outdoor drying"= $500 Get your car back in 3 days with dirt, feathers, and other crap engraved in your paint. Not to mention, the numerous paint defects in which it will be bubbled up, and your gas tank along with the edges of your windsheild will be the same color as your car,You get what you pay for.... ive seen it before! Anyway im just glad I got what I deserved
