Alpine CDE-7858 question

I bought my FD with the stereo out. The guy gave me a Alpine CDE-7858 unit and a Kenwood KGC-7043 graphic equalizer unit. Is it a good idea to put them together? Will the equalizer make the sound better? Do I need an amp? I don't intend to put in those big subwoofers in the trunk. I have no experience with these things so any advice will be appreciated. I'm not sure that a Bose unit was originally installed, is that impt? How can I know for sure?

Also I only have 1 of those plastic pieces that is supposed to surround whichever unit. It seems logical that I'll need two since it's a double DIN. What does DIN mean anyway? How do I get another plastic piece?

Thanks for helping.
