I'm installing an alarm and was wondering if there was another place you guys recommend where I can hook up the power other than directly at the battery.

just go to the fuse box, use a tester and find a fuse that has power all the time. there's a couple of them in there. if you don't need a 12v source all the time, check various fuses to see if they have power when the key is turned on. that's what i used for my alarm.
