Aftermarket Steering wheel and cops

I want to put on an aftermarket steering wheel, removable to help with security. Can't steal a car with no steering wheel. For those that have them, are cops hardasses about fix it tickets on those? I'm in San Diego if that matters.

I have a Momo aftermarket wheel and I live in Toronto. I haven't been pulled over yet though. Fingers crossed, but in the past I was not harassed

Would most cops even recognize an aftermarket steering wheel?

By which I mean that most cops have never seen an RX7; let alone know what the wheel looks like. Especially if you get a simple black Nardi wheel, they did fit that brand to the FD so you aren't lying if you tell them Mazda used Nardi wheels on some RX7's

It wouldn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out that a deep corn doesn't have an airbag.

OP: I know a few people in the Bay Area with aftermarket steering wheels and have never heard anyone mention getting hassled.

Fair point.....my other vehicles have been so old that they never came with airbags, so i forget the one in my FD was removed!

So with that in mind I personally would think the decision of removal regarding safety is more of a worry than a ticket form a cop. But then where I live the cops couldn't care less what you do to your car

Haha I agree 100%.

"No airbag is illegal because you might get injured if you crash. Here's a carton of cigarettes and a Oxycontin prescription."

Had an S14 that was stolen from a public parking lot. The steering wheel is still in my room for the sadness reminder... even without a steering wheel, you can use a pair of vise grips to steer.

Personally I'm in LA and never had an issue with police, but it is illegal in the FD, since cars after a certain year must have a driver airbag, and even later years must have come with passenger airbags.

I’ve been pulled over with one and the cop never noticed it. But then again, there were quite a few other things to distract him including my turbo timer
