? about vented hoods
I was looking into the mazda speed hood, but i use my car as a daily driver. The only thing holding me back is what if it rains. I love the looks and benefits of having a vented hood, but is it possible to have one for a daily driver thru all weather conditions. Mostly rains in FL.

The mazdaspeed hood vents are directly over the intercooler, so even the small amount of water going in just gets on the intercooler and is harmless. In fact there isn't a whole lot under the hood that is sensative enough to water that it would be an issue, although if you have a lot of polished parts, it may get old cleaning off the water spots.

Thanks 65Imp makes sense, do you have one in your ride, i just want to be 100% postive before i purchase.
I kind of disagree with turbo fd, i have the stock under belly pan, which protects the underneath pretty well. But i'm sure it gets wet when driving tru some deep puddles though. So i guess it can go both ways.
Anybody that have vented hoods please posts your thoughts

I went from the knightsport hood to Rotaryextreme's carbon fiber scoot hood with out using the rain guards and the only problem is really the polished parts get dirty quick. My buddy has the mazdaspeed c/f hood and the little bit of water that comes in the car hits the plastic intercooler. If your worried about water then don't.Last year his car was buried in snow for weeks and he had no problem.Also.our bodyshop did put mesh so leaves and **** would not get into the engine bay.The scoot hood you could stick your fingers in there and put stuff apart.

Some water (nothing serious if the car is moving) won't hurt your engine (it gets wet anyway when it rains), and you would mainly be worried about the intake drawing in water. Unless you are driving through flash flood areas or deep puddles, I wouldn't worry too much. Water gets into the engine bay when it rains anyway, and many people also hose down their engines with a light mist when cleaning it. If you are really worried about it though, just be sure to look into rain gaurds for heavy rains.

Check out how I vented my car with my stock hood Silverflash2..I live in Bay area and we get alot of rain..
How much is that hood??Well this mod I am making
Vents your car without having holes on top..
Something like a cowl hood.Well many hate it some like it tell me what you think..
Works fine in the rain for me,I park outside =)

just two points
1) i had this question on my mind before, and i asked around, and apparently rain cant/wont do anything by gettin in your engine bay...you don't have exposed wires sitting all over the engine bay lol.
More specifically, FD3BOOST has the mazdaspeed hood w/o any rainguards, and it rains a LOT where we live. he's never had any problems. in fact, he told me he routinetly cleans his engine bay w/ water
2) Vented hood + rainguard = retarded, since EVERY rainguard I have seen either SEVERELY restricts or practically (for all intensive purposes) blocks the vent, thereby making your expensive vented hood simply an asthetic addition, and totally non-functional...

No it's not Turbo'd
The only issues I've had with vented hood is leaving it outside in a rainstorm... from my experience, with a Scoot Hood no rainguards, it will be tough to start up, sometimes it just won't fire, untill dry by sun, or heat by engine, which is tough since you can't fire it up. I ended up waiting 1X and push starting it the other... I'd carry a "Hood-Sized" piece of tarp or car cover in teh trunk in Florida, in Ca. you can predict what time of year it rains, the other 10 Months = Bone Dry

That's where vented might not be practical, unless you figure out a way of channeling the water that runs off away from the motor, since rain droplets are far less of an issue than the large surface area of the hood that collects and channels rain into the slots...

1) wouldn't your main concern be - just as you said - water channeling it's way to the motor, not say, the front of the engine bay (IC area), cuz the way the Mazdaspeed hood is shaped and vented, water would only be entering to the front of the engine bay, no where near the engine itself...
and 2) wouldn't that mean if you have a scoot hood, you're basically screwed? lol

Yes I own a scoot Hood, yes it's not ideal for rain / weather / car washing. and No I won't get a different one, and yes it's F'ing mamazing how much heat it gets rid of...

I lost you on the batmobile part
and i wasn't joanin on the scoot hood. it's hot..no doubt (even tho it's a lil too much for me haha) but my point was w/ those multiple huge vents/openings, that's gotta be a major prob for ya when it rains...

To everyone else: There has been several threads as of late discussing vents & water. The consensus is that rain doesn't matter unless you are parked. THAT is when you install rain-blocking plates ( I used a garbage bag laid out under the hood). There are no issues reported by anyone with a vented hood while the car is in motion
