99 spec sidemarkers same as protege's?

while i was lookin in2 gettin the 99 spec sidemarkers, a cpl told me they're practically identical to the sidemarkers u can get from mazda for the protege... and for like the $60some u pay, u get the lights AND wiring harness...

any truth to that? cuz if they're practically identical, there's no real point in payin $60 JUST for the lights, and havin to wait 4 'em to come in, correct?

I will take a picture of it tonight. I have a 2003 Protege 5, the side markers look the same as the '99 spec, close enough anyways.

yeah, the side markers are the same ones. The rx-7 OEM side markers are the same on the protege. I have a set of OEM side markers and the other day I saw the same thing on the protege so I'm very very sure that they are the same.

I have sidemarkers from a Mazda Tribute. Same thing. The protege ones are clear with amber bulbs aren't they? The Tribute ones have amber lenses as well.

i guess im prob just gonna find which one is cheaper and rock that one.

Since this thread's question has been answered, I guess it's ok for me to hijack it.

On the 99 spec RX-7 the side lights are amber, so are they wired as turn signals or running lights? With many front-ends (99 included) you end up with no running lights on the front 3/4 of the car. I bought my car with the side markers wired as running lights for this reason, and was considering switching them to turn signals.

yea...WHERE??!!

i dropped by the dealership and u know wut they told me? $60some bucks, and i think that was for each one. parts department are professional robbers.... they just happen to wear a uniform lol

skotx...

if u mean dim/parking lights by "running lights" then here's the deal

w/ the 99 spec noses, the front combo lights (the $400 ones) are SUPPOSED to be wired w/ RE or knightsport wiring harnesses, so the amber bulb is a turn signal, and the other bulb is a dim/parking light. but most ppl dont buy the harness, so they just make one, and wire it into either parking or turn signals...

as for sidemarkers...wut i thought most ppl do is run a wire from the sidemarker to the turn signal... so it acts as a turn signal, not a dim/parkin light. thats why imma get the protege lights that come w/ a harness, so it'll be easier to set 'em up as turn signals

oh and btw..i dunno where ur located, but if ur in someplace like gay VA... having a sidemarker light as a dim/parking light WILL get u pulled over, esp. in fairfax county. they're not supposed to be on while driving.. only when turning lol...go figure

The side markers are always used as turn signals. The 99-spec + bumper doesn't have the front side blinkers (in front of the tire well) anymore... (like all jdm cars). The only running lights will be the small white one in the front bumper lens.

I bought mines from corksport. I think I bought both of them for $80 bucks. They're the clear ones.

They're called turn signal repeaters. So, yes, they are to be wired to the turn signals.

Sorry for the late response, but I actually got mine on Ebay.

Some guy was selling factory sidemarkers from a Mazda Tribute, and they happened to be the same as the JDM RX7 ones. I got my friend a set too. Just keep an eye out for them on Ebay.

Did anyone's Protege/MPV/Tribute sidemarkers come w/ a harness or any wiring at all sticking out the back of the socket? Cuz I checked out a set today, and all it had was a plug connector on the back...and I got a friend who wants the splicing to be as easy as possible...

Thanks

Neo, you wouldn't happen to have a part number for that, would ya? And I'm assuming you're talking about the Protege/Tribute harness, right? I don't have a manual for 'em...

Thanks

Just leave them off Ramy. VA inspection doesn't require them.

Peter, I already have 'em on my FD, and for almost 2 years now (See the pic below). I'm asking for a friend who wanted to simplify the install...

Neo,

Parts diagram shows '00 Protege didn't have sidemarkers in the fenders...only later years did...
