'99 Spec Bumpers

Has anyone dealt with any of the '99 spec bumpers from these shops? I'm mainly wondering about the extreme dimensions and race on products because they're closer to me, so shipping will be cheaper.

Wrong Section...I see this being moved to Interior/Exterior quickly.

On to your question. Out of those three, I'd suggest the Pettit as probably the best fit. What you save on insanely cheap body kits...raceone, extremed, etc. you usually end up paying more for in the labor to have it fit.

One of the local guys had a Pettit bumper and his body guy said the bumper was a good fit and minimal work was needed to make it right. Others may chime in but I'd consider Pettit the most viable of the 3 in terms of quality.

whoops, sorry!

but yeah, i've heard a lot about petit racing's products. what about the products from rx7.com, rx7store.net, and corksport? they're rather pricey though. i'm on a bit of a budget for the body work and paint required. i just want to go stock body, because i want to slap on a racing beat dual tip exhaust to really get my car to shut up lol.

Why not just get an authentic 99spec bumper with the plate holder? I understand that its more expensive than these knock offs but the fitment will be top notch and much better overall quality.

i am unfamiliar with the rest but extreme dimensions did not get off to a good start on the MR2 board... the fitment was terrible for their products..

aah k. thanks for the heads up guys. i think i'll just bite the bullet and get an authentic '99 spec bumper. i guess i'll be buying from rx7.com/rx7store.net or corksport.

one more question. i haven't really had a chance to take the front bumper off and take a look, but since i have an origin lab body kit on my car which has the '99 spec style combo lights on it, would that mean that i already have a '99 spec rebar? i noticed that aftermarket bumpers extend the front of the car a little bit. are the combo lights just screwed into the bumper skin and not the rebar, seeing as the bumper skin possibly has the combo lights mounted forward from the rebar?

sorry for the long read hah. i hope someone understands what i'm trying to say, and thanks in advance.

Order it from corksport, it will be closer than those three & authentic.

The price is pretty fair too.

I bought stuff from pettit, wasn't stoked on quality, called them to try to discuss my dissapointment, got blown off like an *******, met up with them at sevenstock (a few years ago) & called yum ou on their shitty product & service.

They just gave me a blank stare, but no refund or apology.

Pettit is worthless in my opinion, but some people swear by them.

I'll never put pettit anything on my car, or support them in any way.

You might have a '99 Spec rebar, but my guess is that you probably have an USDM '93-'95 rebar that is modified.

Either way, you will see how the lights are mounted, when you pull your bumper off for the switch.

P.s. Get yourself an underplate/splitter to go with your new bumper skin.

is it just a fitment issue with the stock undertray?

Ok here is the real deal about the extreme dimensions and raceonusa plateless bumpers:

A few years ago Chuck from rotary extreme took it upon himself to build a polyurethane (flexible) replica 99 bumper without a plate. The fitment had to massaged but overall was not bad. Since rotary extreme had to foot the protyping bill for the bumpers they went for $450 (IIRC) in the GB.

Some time later and somehow, JF racing (a cheap vendor just like raceonusa and extreme dimensions) got hold of chuck's property (the mold) and started making them for cheap $299 (IIRC). Now these folks could sell them for cheap since they never ponied up the 20K that it takes to fab the initial run...

Now you have multiple vendors offering the plateless bumper but they are from the same mold that Chuck first did for us.

Mine is a Rotary Extreme bumper but the fitment obviously applies to Extreme Dim and raceon. FYI- The gap between the hood and the bumper is caused by the hood.

Now the pettit has better fitment but the downside is that it's made of fiberglass so it cracks easily.

hm, that makes my decision harder haha. so that bumper went on easy, and not much had to be done to make it fit properly? Do authentic '99 spec DRLs fit into the replica bumper well?

Some people claim it was easy, other people report that their body shop had a hard time. My bodyshop had to "massage it" but they didn't complain. I will say though it was a custom body shop who know what they are doing.

Do a search on rotary extreme plateless 99 bumper and you will find pics and info.

Pettit Racing 99 Spec, No Plate Bumper is Urethane. They have a 'GT' Style and that one is Fiberglass.

I should have one installed within a couple weeks.

yeah, i do realize that. thanks, supernaut. by the way, i love your car!

but as for going for a replica bumper... i prefer the no plate look, but i don't mind the oem bumpers either. i could very possibly spend enough money for an oem bumper if by chance i get a poorly fitting bumper... tough. only one way to find out, right?

if you could, would you be able to post pictures when the bumper is on matt? also, could you let me know how the fitting went?

It used to be fiberglass, glad to see they stepped up!

oh one thing I just remembered:

The body shop did say that it would had been easier to have gotten the OEM bumper (fits like a glove) and just shave off the plate holder. Of course this shop is competent in working with that type of materials. Sorry i didn't remember that but in my defense I had my bumper installed 4 years ago and details are a little fuzzy.

So if you want perfect fitment you can never go wrong with OEM.

is there any warping or anything as a result of the replica bumper being put on?

My raceon 99 plateless urethane is still fine and looking great after almost 2 years.

If you cant get it to fit, or a body shop cant get it to fit well, you or your body man have absolutely no business messing with body work. That fitment was done by myself and my buddy. It was the first time we have EVER attempted body work. After I was happy with the fitment I gave it to my painter (err... cousin) and had him paint it for me.

Also note the lack of issues where the bumper and hood meet. The gap is just like all the other body panel gaps in terms of size.

You just have to spend a bit of time on it. Its your front bumper after all. Wouldn't you rather just suck up a couple extra hours of body shop labor to get it looking how you want it now instead of always wishing you didn't have the plate holder? I know for me I plan to keep this car for a looooooong time. Spending several extra hours was well worth it in the long run for me. I've showed you proof it can fit as good as oem. If its worth the effort from there is up to you.
