8inch subs in speaker towers

hey guys i have an 86 n/a and i am really considering putting an 8inch Kicker freeair sub in each of the rear speaker towers. i am wondering if anyone has tried this and what problems they might have encountered? im not sure if the cover would fit back over the speaker tower once the sub was in...
thanks guys!

Are you sure that it's big enough for 8". I thought I measured it smaller than that once. Could be wrong, I have a very selective memory. Don't think you'll have to worry about depth though. If the speaker fits in the hole then the cover should be no problem. It goes around the whole thing so unless the speaker sticks out, no problem.

I tried this once, just to see what it sounded like and the answer, as I expected, was shocking!
They will fit in, but there is no where near enough volume in a speaker tower, especially for a freeair sub. When I turned on the music the subs moved but there was hardly any noise coming from them.

I did the same thing and had the same results. So I took them back and put some 6 1/2's in there. Sounded better with the 6 1/2.

Yeah I have done that too, by f'glassing in the area of each tower to get a sealed enclosure, trimming the enclosure to fit an 8" and it sounded very poor.

So I tuned a port into the enclosure and tried that, it still sounded bad.

Dropped a couple of JL 6 1/2 inch coaxs in and it rocked.

You only get about 1/3 of a cubic foot in each tower, even if you had a ton of power its tough to get an 8 to sound good there.
