Hey guys, new to the forum here and happy that I didn't buy a Honda like my brother haha. Anyways, cutting to the chase, my 87 GXL's sunroof doesn't seem to operate properly, the motor works but sounds like it's dying. While holding the button if I push up on the 'roof it will crack open about 1/2" or a lil more but won't retract. Well, today I tried it for ***** and giggles aaaand now it won't go back down into place I have a Haynes manual and I've searched the forums but I can't seem to find anyone with the same problem or a diagram of how to gain access to the chain drive for the sunroof. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much! -Pedro

 

Try using the hand crank. It will open/close the sunroof without stressing the motor. There should be a tool for it somewhere, maybe glovebox, I dont really remember. Behind the sunroof theres a plastic circle on the headliner, pop it off and you'll see the screw. If you cant find the tool, a hex/zeta/alan key should work. Once its open you can look around and clean,fix, etc.

 

damn i have the same problem with my new one 7, sorry can't help but yeah also new to this here club. but if your motor sounds like its whinding down you might have to replace that soon. I'm bout to rip everything out and fix it or just weld it shut and take out the whole sunroof assembly. i had the same problem with my old one also.

 

More than likely the tracks are just dirty and getting caught. The motor doesnt have the torque to free it and sounds like its dying. With the tracks cleaned the motor will probably work fine. The electrical motors in these cars are quite resilliant.

 

Popped the plastic cap off and cranked her open, cleaned the tracks with air, vac, and some lube and now she's running like a champ! Thanks alot for the help guys, really appreciate it!

 

well if worked for you i give it a shot. to the other guy yaeh the motors are pretty reliable.

 

also if you search here on the forum there IS a writeup on how to disassemble to properly clean the tracks out..
