Question 86 cassette player swap-out?

Yes I'm still a newbie but when I bought my 86 back in 86 the sales code had the letters CD in it and the dealer thought it meant there was a CD player included. "Ooops, sorry and take $500 off the sales price". I can't take the cassette player anymore but I want to keep the car as stock as possible.
The question: Since the stereo(am/fm/cass/eq) is modular, can I just replace the cassette player with the CD unit from a later model(it almost looks like plug and play)????? This should let me keep the EQ and would still look factory.
