3rd gen subs? What can you recommend

I need a small amount of bass for my 3rd gen...Space is tight back there. Whats a good set up that wont take up the whole rear compartment? Let me know what you guys are using or have found out....

i have a single image dynamics idq10 sub (10") in a box in the trunk... they're relatively cheap, very accurate subs. they're not as loud as some of the other subs but the sound is very clean.

I plan on getting an 8 or 10" unpowered bazooka for my FD. I've heard them in other cars with tight cabins and they're accurate enough for me. It's not a competition sub, but neither is the rest of my system, so it's probably gonna be good enough for me.

do yourself a favor and get a kicker solobaric 10" square sub. Run it with 400-500 watts and you'll have more than enough bass. Not a sub that takes a smaller box either

For 10" subs, i would recommend a JL 10W3 if you want more SPL, but if you just want SQ, the JL doesn't even come close to the Image Dynamics IDQ10. When I swapped out my JL 10W3 for an IDQ10, I was really amazed at the difference in sound quality... it was like night and day. The 10W3 is admittedly "louder" but the IDQ10 hits much cleaner and IMHO, is a more versatile sub for a wider range of music.

But if anyone wants a JL10W3, I have one that I used for around 3 months that's been sitting in my room for a while, make me an offer.

If you don't mind going with a little bigger sub, I fully recommend a 12" shiva from adire audio. That subs kicks ***.

I think that 2 10"s are more than enough for a small car.

before ive been into FDs i was into car audio. i have another car which ive extensively shown and in all my experience, one of the best sounding and most tonally accurate subs ive come across is the new jl audio 10w7. put one of these guys in your hatch, give it about 500watts, and enjoy. these things are big, but pour out tons of sound. 1 ten and a decent amp are all youd need for an incredible sounding system in such a small play space such as the rx-7.

What about a 12w7, I have had my eyes set on that for a while now. Maybe a little much for the small 7 but still it would be bad ***.

its an unbelievable sub. the bass responce in the lower end of the sound spectrum is amazing, and because of the tight cone construction it hits the higher hertz almost as brilliantly. the ****** weighs like 40lbs, just a word of warning. and to get it running at peak performance, itll suck an easy 700-1000 peak watts. and lastly it requires a lot of air for playing space, no small boxes. thats why i think a 10w7 would be a better solution for the small hatch space of a 3rd gen. and by the way make sure to get plenty of dyno-mat

Thanks for that info. JL makes a nice amp that powers 1000x1 but you brought up a good point about the space. What about a free air setup.

i havent dealt with any new products in free air set ups, i remember JL has the w0's which is an "infinite baffle" subwoofer. requires little power and almost no playing space, or they play in a free air set up
http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/w0.html
i remember my main installer,
www.sounds-good-stereo.com
a very exclusive high end shop out here in so cal, used the w0's in all of his open air set ups. just a thought, check that jl link and tell me what you think.

I'll chime in with another vote for the IDQ 10". I have a 12 in my Subaru right now and it's extremely accurate (I was going for affordable - not cheap - SQ) and has quite a bit of punch as well. Pushing it with a Phoenix Gold XS2300.

Good luck, whatever you choose.

yowzahs, my friend sells that over at circuit city. by the way is that an efficient way for that sub to be pointing? kinda looks like its firing directly into your rear window hatch glass

I think I am stuck on the W7 series, they just look really unique and seem much more advanced. I have only heard good things about them. I was looking at JL's boxes and they said for the 12W7’s box, 34"W x 20.5"D x 17"H is the box size and the 10W7 is 32"W x 19.25"D x 15.25"H. Do you have any info to the proper dimensions for both the 10W7 and 12?
