Question 2nd gen front speakers NEED HELP!!!

hey everyone i need some help, i just started driving and i have a 1986 rx7 gxl and i went to curcuit city today to buy a headunit and speakers for it. They looked the car up in their computer and said that it had 5.25" speakers all the way around. So i bought a pioneer headunit and 4 polk 5.25 speakers. To make things short i get them home and the front speakers are too big and the stock ones are 4". Best Buy and Circuit city both say a 86 rx7 has 5.25" all the way around. The front speakers are under the dash and not in the door. Does anyone know if all 86 rx7s have 4 inch stock front speakers and if 5.25 will fit up front?

thanks alot, i need help soon because the speakers are supposed to be installed wed. evening.

Yes in my 1990 GXL the front speakers are 4" under the dash. Then I believe in the doors on some models such as mine there are 5.25" speakers and then in the rear i have 6.5".
I think that some S4's may have come with 5.25's in the rear also though but i can't remember 100%.
Easiest thing to do is just take off the 4 screws holding on the cover and take a look at the speaker. Takes about 5 mins.

The 4" ones up front would be a HUGE pain in the *** to try and mod to fit bigger speakers. Either mount them in the door or get 4" ones to replace them.

ok i checked my rear speakers also and they are 5.25" but they seem to be in some kind of bracket from the factory and looks to me that 6.5" speakers could fit back there if the bracket was removed. Also my right front speaker was gone when i bought the car and i dont see anywhere under the dash that the speaker would even mount so im not sure if im just overlooking it or if someone before i bought it took it out? does anyone have pictures of the front right speaker mounts under the dash?

Back speakers, 6 1/2"; fronts, 4 inch. Run new speaker wire from the back of your headunit to your speakers.

When you say "front" speakers do you mean the under-dash ones or the ones in the door? My 89 GTU has 4" under the dash, 5 1/4" in the door and 6 1/2" in the back. All aftermarket Pioneer by the way. And they're all pretty easy to install. Once you take care of the wiring it's just a matter of screwing little interior pieces off.

New Guy - I did the same exact thing. I went to BestBuy, looked it up, bought 5.25" speakers. Surprize! they didn't fit. So... i was like... "how the hell did they get 5.25 inches from 4?"

They measured from the end of the screw brace to the end of the other screw brace and their retarded system is all messed up now.
get some 4" speakers like i did.

I believe its on all S4's but im not positive on that, and i also got my headunit and speakers installed today, they sound good but the damn headunit keeps cutting off as bass hits when the volume is turned up, i have no idea why. Circuit city couldnt put in my front right speaker because i am missing whatever the speaker is supposed to mount onto. Does anyone know where i can get this piece to mount my front right speaker under the dash??

Alright i just finished a stereo install in my fc, first of all the front doors are 5.25 in the doors, Dont even think about 6.1/2s. The local stereo install guy said dont worry about it they will fit no problem, he neglected to day the depth of the speaker is a factor , and about best buy thats like future shop yeah they said 5.25s too when i was thnking about under the dash, "its uh 5.25 all around yeah um thats what it is iam postitive", nevermind i get pissed just thinking of future shop anywho yeah under the dash is 4's but i dont think you can make room for something a little bigger, i have crossovers mounted there for my tweeters, pretty sweet setup. Your question about where u can get the mounts,, you can check ebay they have like everything, and the best place by far is a recking yard you will find it for next to nothing,,,

I don't have any pix but in the rear you can cut the plastic to fit whatever you want back there. All sizes sound pretty good. In my 87 Turbo I got 6.6 in the rear and on my friends TurboII I installed those 8 inch pioneer 3 ways, all I had to do was remove all the plastic, and drill the edge of the speaker straight into the metal of the strut tower. With the 8's it sounds like theres a 10 inch box on about 100watts, they are getting amped at 40watts RMS. you can cut out your front doors for speakers, there's someone on the forum that did it and posted pix, try searching for it.
