[3] 94 Touring Stock CD Player Removal
My CD player in my 94 3rd Gen can't eject the CD, it keeps trying to eject it but it wont come out. I have the manual and tried to remove the CD player by using the coat hanger method. Did not work, I stick the end in the holes and spread them apart, I can see and feel the clips inside spreading as they are suppose to, but when I pull, the CD player will not come out before the force is too great that the coat hanger then pulls out of the holes. I then went to Advance Auto and bought the $5.00 OEM tool which is basically the same thing except it has the necked down rounded ends, but alas, same problem! What gives! I've spent probably 3 hours total trying to get this damn CD player out. Now I'm wondering, do you have to have the Radio out FIRST before you can remove the CD player? Are there any undocumented tricks to removing this? Im at my wits end on this, and I've come very close many times to scratching the front of the CD/Radio and dash when the damn tool suddenly lets go due to the force I'm exerting when trying to extract the CD player. And YES, I am compressing the spring clips as much as I can by pulling the tool away fromt the center, but it still won't come out.

My cd player was a b*tch to get out. It actually was backstrapped with a screw that went through a really tight rubber plug that was mounted to the frame. I basically pulled apart the entire dash just to pull on the deck extremely hard. It finally came out but be careful with the plug on the back. good luck

I know it's a distance, but if you will run down to Atl, I will get it out for you. It is a nightmare if you are not used to it. I have the proper tools and have done it thousands (literally) of times.
You have probably pushed the tool into far and spread the clips to wide to come out normally. that's what happens if you push them in too far. They can only be pushed in until you feel the click. If you used a coat hanger, you will not feel it.

Okay, after much struggling, I finally got the $#&^ing CD player out, what a pain in the asprin. I had to go buy a set of metal hooks and use them to pull on the CD player as my girlfriend compressed the clips. Finally, it pulled out, well, partially. Not only did I have trouble (described before) getting it unhooked, but once I did, the freakin' cable in the back got hung on the radio and I could not get the CD player out UNTIL I partially removed the radio unit. Then my girlfriend stuck her tiny arms in there and managed to wiggle the cable free and disconnect it from the radio unit.
Anyway, I took the CD player apart in hopes that it would be something that I could fix. After spending the entire afternoon (and a trip to Radio Shack for parts to hook up the thing with power to watch it work) it turns out the some of the plastic gears are stripped/split, something that I can't fix. So I need to send it out for repair.
On top of the CD unit it says:
MODEL NO. FD04 66 9G0B (not sure if these are O's or zeros)
REF. NO. CX-DM5240A
Manufactured by Matsushita Communication
blah, blah, blah...
I looked on the internet, looks like Matsushita is part of Panasonic, their website required you to enter a part number and zip code to find an authorized repair center. I did this, but it doesn't recognise the part number (I tried all combos of O's and zeros). So, anybody know where to send our CD players for repair? I seem to remember on the RX-7 mail list that people had sent them out, but don't remeber where. I would appreciate any help.
