What laptop & OS are you running?

Just picked up one one these babies:

http://www.pcworld.ca/news/product-r...17b196/pg0.htm

My old toshiba has been handed down to my mom and dad. I bought this little baby for ease of use in the vehicle and I have to say - works awesome!! The key board is a little cramped but I'm not writing essay's!!

Only downfall is there's no CD drive, but its not like that can't be worked around But for $405.67 tax in brand new I figure I couldn't go wrong?

Running a genuine version of windows 98 service pack 3, using a Keyspan USA-19HS adapter and works great!

Only weighs about 1kg too

What've you got and how's yours work?

EDIT: and the Halwin issues I was having on my old laptop (unable to change to imperial units, trigger diagostics missing and a few other small things) are gone on the new unit - happy camper here!!

I use an IBM thinkpad E600, $110 CDN.
It's a P2, running WinME.

It can run the PFC SW for our race car.
Runs the 6X DOS SW for my old FC. Not a big fan of Halwin for the 6X. Just too many bugs.
It runs Halwin, too when I'm forced to tune a car with the internal MAP sensor.

Does your Thinkpad has a serial port I take it? I tossed around the idea of going with a dellD600 to get a serial port, but used they're still $200+ so I thought, meh, I'll give this one a shot.

I use an HP Pavilion DV1000, no serial port, with Keyspan and Prolific USB to serial adapters, Windows XP SP3, and all works marvelously.

I have also used a Vista powered HP DV6000, with no serial port, and also no problems.

Ah! i just realized, with Vista you need to tell it that the Haltech software is to be run as Administrator, that way there wont be a closing of the comm port. Hmmm, i wonder if that could work with DOS on XP?

Have also used a Dell 700m with Keyspan USB serial adapter, running XP.

My favorite lappy for tuning is the Dell D600 series, they are very good, cheap, come with a serial port, and XP Pro.

I tried that "run as administrator" option in XP to see if i could get DOS software to communicate, but it didnt work.

I have tried everything to get it to work on my 64bit machine... so i have been sticking to my old Toshiba Satellite Pro 445CDX that I bought brand new back in 1993 for 1800 bucks

It is a pentium with 48 MB RAM, 1.4GB HDD and windows 95... it's a little slow to bootup and he screen is getting harder and harder to see... but it works good

Im told 64bit machines arent compatible with either Halwin or DOS, because of the 64bit processor. Dont know what to tell ya.

No need to tell me anything... I figured it out on my own

anyhow, I was just posting the compatibility issue for others to see so that they can buy a laptop accordingly

Have you tried using DOSbox? It emulates a dos enviroment and should work on your 64 bit machine. I have a Dell Mini 9 with a USB serial cable adapter-- I emulate dos and the the tuning software runs without issue.

As long as you can run dosbox on your machine and have a usb-serial adapter that your computer can see then you should be able to set it up regardless of what brand the machine is.
