Timing questions on 3rdgen

Ok perhaps I'm making this out to be harder then it really is.

Here is what I was told to do.

set timing lock to on and enter in 0 in the lock degrees field.
change my trailing split to 20 degrees.
use trailing #1 for my timing light signal.

start car use timing light.

That said I think I have figured this out but want a verification.

If the timing mark is at 20 degrees atdc and I am using the trailing 1 plug for my timing light then theoretically It should line up provided my trigger degrees field is correct. If not I know it is a case of adding or subtracting the degrees and I should make it to 0 for the base timing.
having both the timing mark and the pin on the case cover lining up.

Does that sound correct??

If not any help would be appreciated.

Nop, you got it wrong. You set the timing lock ON and set the timing lock value to -5 degrees, on E6X there is a default trailing split of 15 degrees, so when you lock it, the trailing will be at -20 degrees (or 20 degrees ATDC), so when you put your timing light clamp onto T1 wire you can align the mark correctly with a trigger angle of about 65 +/-, and tooth offset 5. If the mark is 180 degrees out, you have your ignition trailing wires backwards, or the ignition output wires from the haltech backwards. On the E8/E11 you can manually set the split value, so just use -15.
