Throttle: 0% :) 1% :( 2% :( 3% :) Why?

Hello again my fine fellow haltech users. I got another riddle for the group. This will hopefully help me cross another problem off the very long list. :/

Was thinking there was a problem with my car ramomly going REALLY high AFRs at idle randomly. Instead I know that it is just happening at 1% and 2% throtte when my throttle body sticks and doesn't close all the way. (that problem will be fixed as soon as I find a 20b throttle body.

Anyways, I dont understand why at 0% throttle car is happy idling at ~12.7 afr, then 1% throttle it shoots up to 17 afr, idle gets eratic and car shakes, same with 2% throttle, and then 3% throttle it revs and take.s off just fine.

Attached is my log. I tried to log all the things people might think is important. I can go back and log this any time, this senario is repeatable easily.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

thats because your using the zero throtle map

At 0% its on the zero map at 1% it goes off it

Under sensor filtering, you can select tps filter and put a value in to keep it on the zero throttle map longer, throttle dead band also affects this. Throttle dead band should have a value , and is also a quick fix for the sticking throttle.

Ok, but why does it come out of its funk at 3% throttle?

Thank you for those tips btw.

In case its not clear, changing the dead band to 2 percent will make the throttle not effect the running condition until it moves 2 percent worth, the filter has a similar but I believe not identical effect.

It might be moving to a better tuned area of the map, or you might have some trigger noise down low etc.

If your throttle is moving from 0-3% without you touching it: this is a TPS issue.

If the throttle is simply not returning to the stop spray some TB cleaner around the throttle plate hardware, and some lube on the outer portions of the hardware.

No it doesn't go from 0-3% randomly I am making it do that in the log. Sometimes thought it gets stuck at 1% or 2% and doesn't' return to 0. I was just wondering if this is a normal thing between 0.01 throttle and ~2%, of if something is wrong again. lol Since I removed EVERYTHING from my throttle body, I am assuming that my Tb could be too closed or something.

ok, I found the dead band feature, I will put it at 3%. Thanks!

Seems as though this has been a problem for a while.

Don't use the the zero throttle map for your application.

I had the exact same problem when i tried the 0 throttle map. It would be idling away at 12.5 AFR, but would randomly lean out to like 17 and die. at no throttle at all (idling), steady vacuum, steady temp. doesnt seem to be a throttle tip in problem

I dont understand why it would do this, if the throttle dead band is too low, wouldnt it simply revert back to the standard map? it idles fine on the standard map. i dont see how it could lean out and die

Because the tune was done using the zero throttle map. BDC did my car the same way. I never noticed it until a few weeks of driving as my TB does tend to stick a little bit when cold (I'd have 1% throttle at idle........I could "kick" the pedal and get it to close all the way, but sometimes you wouldn't notice unless you were viewing the data pages at the time)

this problem goofed me around a little bit, but originally I upped my deadband settings and got rid of it, then later on went as far as retuning the idle in fuel map 1 and disabling the zero throttle map.

Just remember Tweak, zero throllte maps are like fat women. They are good to play with, you just don't want your friends to find out about it.

lolol Thanks both classicauto and 13b-Rx3. lol.

Well, next I must ask for some more help. I need to obviously add fuel in the 500-1000 rpm range at the idles vacs. My idle's vac can be anywhere from -8 psi (and bouncing) when my afrs are off and my idle is like 700, to -9.8 psi when I think my afrs and tune is just right and my vac is solid. (I found this out last night when I got my 0 throttle set perfectly. lol)

Is there a simple way for me to do this?

Thanks

To start with just copy the settings out of the zero throttle map into the idle vac range and make sure that there is a smooth transition out of that range up to your tuned range.

Hey! What's the big idea? I like the zero throttle map. Why do some of you guys not like it?

I love the zero throttle map but it's not for every application especially when you're rookie tuner and learning the steps to tuning. Zero throttle map would drive a rookie crazy especially for the above application where there's no compensaton for load changes with no throttle movement.

not that i dont like it, but it just seems that once you get the idle nice in the map, there is no real need for it. at least on a stockish engine

it is a valid approach, every stock ecu runs a separate idle map.

Weeee, I am having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to tune!

Somehow today, I set off about 30 car alarms decelerating down my hill in my parking lot. lol. I turned decel fuel cut on today so that I wouldn't have all the jerkiness at higher rpm decel, and it was going ok, little poofs, and pops here and there, then it went all quiet for a good 10 seconds when I was cruising down this hill in second testing the map. I was like wow this is smooth, awesome...... KAPOW!!!

(thought I got shot by this guy) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tX7MDAwrqVk I had about the same reaction lol.

All of my mirrors lit up, and one of the 5 or 6 students walking down the hill I was going down dove to the ground. lol I stopped and said sorry. Needless to say decel fuel cut is back off till I get a clue what I am doing lololol.
