Is there any plans to make this work though USB. Or do you have to use the freakin serial cable.

USB would be really badass since i dont even own a laptop with a serial port...

yes vito, change that shitty serial dongle plug into a USB plug for us.

USB support is definitely planned, you will need a USB->rs232 adapter still though.

Not sure on final release date, I need more feedback from beta testers, 2/3 bar configurations have not been tested extensively. I'm tempted to put the turbo on my car just so I can test these configurations myself. Just in the one night of tuning jacobs car on the way back to KY from VA I found a few bugs that need fixing in 2 bar configuration.

beater1.3liter, have you tried the demo?

As briefly mentioned above, I went and helped Jacob Cartmill get his new car over xmas weekend, we wound up doing a e6k install in 20 degree weather, outside in a parking lot before driving the car from VA to KY. Seva, who also came along on the trip had his new cam so we took photos and movies. I'm posting this here because I got to use the E6Tuner demo on the ride home and there are some videos capturing it running on jacobs car... I had not previously tested it on a 2 bar configuration so this was a cool testing opportunity.

Heres the link:

Yeah, don't feel bad I have recieved a number of mails asking "why can't I fit the file on the disk?"

In case you didnt know, this 'weird' method is needed to ensure that the boot code gets written to the proper area of the floppy disk. When you copy a file to a disk normally, the operating system (windows, dos, linux etc) decides WHERE on the disk the data for the file gets stored. When the computer tries to boot off the floppy it doesnt look up a file name or anything advanced like that, it simply tries to use a pre-defined spot on the floppy disk for boot code. Rawrite ensures the data gets placed in the right spot on the disk for it to be bootable, just copying the file would stick it in arbitrary places depending on operating system type, version, and how you formatted the disk etc, all sorts of uncontrolled variables.

Those of you who have used computers for a while may remember format /s a: from DOS, or sys a:, these were ways to write the DOS boot code to the boot sector of the disk. Rawrite replaces this method.

get it?

10th release is out.

USB serial adapter support has been added, and I posted a bunch of photos and took some movies too. Check out the thread here:

Having seen this software in action (live and in person) I was quite impressed. I'll most likely use it, if I ever can afford a standalone (though a standalone NA is somewhat questionable... I should put turbo bits in first).

Thanks for the positive comments Russ

The software is looking much better now vs. the time you saw it, and you also saw it in low resolution on that slow laptop.

Coming within the next month or so should be USB 'webcam' support, you know those cheap $20 USB cams you can buy at walmart etc... I will have support for overlaying gauges onto the video captured in realtime and saving it to a USB thumbdrive. Instant gran-turismo style replays of your runs. And being a cheap $20 camera, you won't think twice about taping it to the front of your car a few inches off the ground <grin>

The first full release won't be out for a few months probably...

In the mean time you can use the beta/demo version that is freely available here:
http://pengaru.com/downloads/e6tuner/beta/

Be sure to look at the readme.txt file

This is a stoopid idea, sorry guys. I am sure that Haltech spends countless months and years ensuring their software will not do anything crazy, or uncontrolled...
then all you guys will be all... haltech is s@$t blah blah blah... use the correct software, and save the headaches.

exciting

Well im sure it will be an exciting time when you tune your engine with this and something goes wrong.....personally im gonna stick with the haltech software - at least that way if something goes *** about i have some recourse with them for their dickups if they have any. If im using anyone elses software i know what haltech's response to my problems will be....
Ohh and dont bet on this working with different firmwares if haltech has to use a different software with new firmware there is probably a reason.

Its not that i dont like the idea - i just dont like the idea that someone other that the manufacturer of the ECU has written the software that controls vital things like the fuel delivery and ignition timing and if there is a bug....ouch !

just my thoughts.....

the software doesnt control anything, just makes it easier to talk to the haltech and map what you want.

the laptop i want to use does not have a floppy drive, is it possible to "image" it to a CD???

otherwise i would have to use my really old shitty laptop, which I doubt could handle this program.

I will be making a cd image in the near future.

As for the guys being all negative about it, the engine data and basic map editing is pretty simple and not error prone, the software checks the firmware version, as this information is encoded in the ecu and is readable by the software. Different code is used for different firmwares, and only firmwares I have reverse engineered and tested myself are supported.

And if you think using Haltechs provided software somehow makes them more liable for any problems, good luck with that. Ask HIGGI and/or ReTed about the popped motors on the E11 (caused by the E11 CRASHING, using Haltechs provided software), ask him how much they (Haltech) paid for the rebuilds.

I don't blame anyone for having concern for bugs or risks, and I encourage being cautious while the software is in the early stages. I don't recommend jumping straight to tuning high load with it. Tune cruise, tune light load, tune correction maps, enjoy the gauges, these are things you can do without putting your engine at risk! After you have become comfortable using the software and confident that it is doing what you ask it to, you should be able to start tuning medium and heavy load just fine. I recommend using this approach with ANY software though! There are other factors you need to consider than the software that can make it pop, never go directly to tuning heavy load, it should be the last thing you explore.

BTW, I re-encoded the movied from pre10 into divx's so they are smaller, and while I was at it brightened them up a bit. Also added some text to the gallery page for pre10. Heres the link again:
http://pengaru.com/gallery/tuning/e6tuner_beta_pre10/

and the download link:
http://pengaru.com/downloads/e6tuner/beta/

just so interested parties don't have to go digging through all the pages.

Is it true that you need to run Linux to get this software working ?
who has that ?

I would say we are all in great debt to you for doing this. The stock haltech tuning software is definatly usable, and easy at that. But it is definately lacking in the fine tuning and visual departments.

The Guage page looks GREAT. Nice layout, and I cant wait to see them on my 1400x1050 display.

variable color, pointer, font ect. options would be a very nice touch. users could match there guage look on the computer to car guages. I would love to have orange numbers to match all my autometer guages.

just a suggestion, I dont know much about programing or how hard it would be.
