Haltech Fried aem smart coils?
Fried aem smart coils?
So have a ps2000 and I wired up my smart coils nice and properly then turned it on in distributor mode. Which I’ve read is a big no no. Then I noticed the relay and wires were really hot to touch as well as the trailing coils. The fuse didn’t pop but was also very hot. Once I realized I immediately switched it to direct fire. Car currently doesn’t run.
So how likely are my coils fried? Is it normal to only fry the trailing in my situation? And can they be bench tested?

I'm assuming you could use one of the spark lights from AutoZone that lights up if the cool fires to verify each coil is still working, but I dont know if a fried coil is fully shot and won't light or if its output is just degraded meaning it could be dead and still light up the indicator.
That's a question for Ludwig, he seems to know more about these coils than anyone else.

I nuked a set of 6 for a supercharged 3 rotor when pulling an all nighter due to wiring everything backwards IIRC. That wasn't fun to admit and replace.
With regards to a bench test I use an MSD test spark plug from one of our old MSD6 testers and just tell the MoTeC to fire. Or if its an ECU that can't force spark then I crank the engine with the same test plug. I suppose you could also rig up a ground to the body of a plug as well.
