Question GB#4 INTEREST thread - FD Bi-Xenon HID's - SBG

This is a GB INTEREST thread for our Bi-Xenon Projector Headlights.

We're completely out of components/headlights and will need to reorder a large batch to produce more. We've also been unbelievably swamped with other parts that we're working on for the FD so headlights have taken a back burner as they simply take too much of our time to hand build. That said, I've talked it over with Dan and agreed to set some time aside from concurrent projects to do one more build on the lights.

If you are interested in purchasing a set of lights please add your name to the list. INTEREST does not mean "yeah, those look great" interest means "yes I would like a set, I can actually submit a payment in a reasonable time frame, and can come up with at least half for a deposit, and the remainder by the end of the group buy" . We've had a lot of tire-kickers recently for FD parts (I'm not sure why) and have had a hard time getting accurate head counts for purchasing parts. So please be thoughtful when adding your name to the list.

INFO:

We all know that the stock headlights on the Rx-7 are vastly inadequate for night driving. With the FD being very capable of high speeds, the possibility of missing something on the side of the road, up ahead, or around a corner is dangerous scenario. We finally decided to fix this problem once and for all. SakeBomb Garage is pleased to knock your socks off with the first and only true 'pop-up' Bi-Xenon Projector HID kit for the FD.

FD owners: Welcome to the 21st Century.

Highlights:
  • New headlight housings, with bi-xenon (high/low) projectors
  • Optically clear projector lenses
  • New (OEM) Philips 4300K bulbs (5000k Morimoto with 50w ballast option)
  • High quality 35w weatherproofed ballast (50w ballasts also available)
  • Plug and play wiring harness specifically for the FD

We’re confident that this is currently the best performing lighting kit available for the FD, from here to Japan… bar none! This setup is the standard against which other lights are currently judged. Yes, they're that good. These lights ARE the gold standard, and we've yet to see a higher performing lighting setup. For a car capable of speeds in excess of 160mph and cornering abilities that put most other cars to shame, you ought to be able to see where you are going. We built these lights not only for an aesthetic benefit, but literally as a safety item to prevent a potential accident. Yes they are expensive, but so is your car and they have personally saved me from a few accidents (and tickets) over the years !

PRICE ($100 off retail):
$875 - 35w Ballasts and Philips OEM 4300k Bulbs
$895 - 50w Ballasts and Aftermarket 5000K Bulbs (~30% brighter)
-shipping is included in the price (international/Hawaii/Alaska/etc will require additional shipping fees)

My car is RHD, but I'm driving it on LHD roads. I don't think that there is no difference between LHD and RHD except the light pattern, right?

correct you'd use lhd lights but they are identical aside from the beam pattern itself which is reversed for RHD roads.

Optional 50W Ballasts

We are now offering the option of a 50w ballast (and accompanying 5000k bulb) instead of the OEM-spec 35w ballasts. There are pros and cons to using 50w ballasts, but we'll do our best to explain the differences below.

Xenon bulbs are manufactured to run at 35 watts, however they can be over-driven to produce more light than would normally be available at a lower wattage. Typically one will find an additional 30% increase in total light, however this extra light does come at a cost. The additional wattage does reduce the lifespan of the bulbs somewhat. The color range of the bulbs is shifted LOWER (more yellow) with increased wattage (however the color temp can be shifted back up to normal (around 4300k) by using "5000K bulbs"), which is why we will supply this kit with 5000 Kelvin bulbs. - At the end of the day, yes, the total light output is increased, but it does not change the beam pattern with which it is distributed, so you simply end up with a BRIGHTER light, not wider or longer throw. Is this a good thing? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. In the city where streets are well lit, the extra light from the 50w ballasts is definitely welcome, but on very dimly lit back-roads the contrast difference between foreground and background could feel overwhelming to some, and reflector signs will appear very reflective. It is a personal choice whether this increased light output is right for you, but if in doubt remember that the OEM standard is 35w.

Please PM or post any questions you might have.

Thanks, Heath

Yeah the cliff notes would be: 50w is 30% more light intensity but does not change width or throw... it's just more light.

City driving with higher levels of ambient lighting I would recommend the additional light from the 50w.

Backroads driving I would recommend the 35w OEM intensity lighting (as the extra light may be too much for back roads if your eyes are sensitive).

That said, I've run both types in both scenarios and at the end of the day you've still got absolutely amazing lighting in either scenario. It all comes down to personal preference, and the sensitivity of your eyes and night vision.

Last I checked the shipping to Australia was around $80-90 depending on location.

For quantity signed up we need roughly 10-15 people (depending on whether everyone is submitting 1/2 deposits or payment in full) to get this thing started. I'd say 1-2 months to start shipping as we've got to place a reorder for custom components so there may be some lag time there.

Maybe a dumb question but if going with the 50w ballast, can you still just simply put the OEM 4300k bulbs in if you find that the light from the 50w 5000k combination is too much?

The ballast controls the amount of wattage the bulb will recieve, things like 4300k and 6800k is just a measurement of the light spectrum produced, with very low k like 2800 being red, 4000ish white and 6000k would be more of a blue if I remember correctly, simply put. The 35w bulbs are being amped up by 15w watts, creating a brighter to the eye light. Feel free to correct or delete this post if I am wrong
