Nope - still waiting for the order to show up - should be another 10 days or so. When I get them in, I'll ship the ones without the vinyl masks, but those who are getting the masks will have to wait until the decal shop cuts em (need to use my old RE lenses for templates).

 

So on the vinyl masks, do you have a pic of the shape it will be?

 

I dont have any pics of the mask or design - will post after the masks are cut. I did hear from the manufacturer on Friday that they mailed the first cover as a sample so I can double check the fitment. I'll take some photos when they show up and post them here so you all can have a look.

 

Hi Everyone,

I received my proof set of covers from Ridout on Friday. Curvature looks good, edge finish looks good, however, I'm concerned that one of the covers is about 1/16" taller around one radius compared to the other cover (see attached photos). I emailed the production manager re: this sizing issue. Since he has my original RE covers, I can't stand them up in the same manner to compare the size to check if my originals had the same difference.

Do any of you have an authentic RE set that you could check for me to see if in fact there is a small difference between the two (which I dont suspect) or if this proof set is off a bit?

Update:

WutangBen, who is part of our group buy, is going to cut our paint masks (he owns a vinyl shop). I'm going to paypal him the mask payments along with a list of addresses and he will send them as soon as he finishes them up. He's also going to include a means to line up the mask.

I've voiced my concerns to Ridout Plastics re: tolerances, and I'm still waiting for another proof set to confirm that they've gotten it right.

I just got all of the covers packaged (large Fed-Ex boxes) and shipped. You should see them in a couple of days. WutangBen is working on your vinyl paint masks. As soon as those are done, I'll send them to the folks who requested them. New covers are identical to my originals in size, shape, and curvature.

can't you read?

 

I dropped all the masks in the mail today.

They are solid shapes done in yellow paint mask. Originally, I figured I would mask them to help with alignment, but this material is so easy to work with, the mask would have been more of a burden than anything.

I will post up pictures and measurements for the margins, but I found it surprisingly easy to eyeball. It's really hard to mess it up when lining it up. The paint mask can be applied, removed, and reapplied, over and over until you feel comfortable with how it sits.

Since it's being applied to the bottom/concave side of the lens, there are going to be some bubbles in the middle, but obviously that won't matter.

If anyone has an issue, or any problems, let me know and I'll take care of it.

the margin on the bottom and the sides is mostly 15mm, however, it's 14mm in some places and 16mm in another. the authentic ones are surprisingly not actually consistent.

keep in mind, i'm not a pro by any stretch of the imagination when it comes to actually working with vinyl.

Got my covers in. They seem great. I have an original RE headlight bucket as well as my Chaser Auto carbon buckets and they fit pretty much the exact same. The convex is great. The only little issue is what I think you were talking about earlier when you said there was a slightly off curve. It's at the back of the bucket and it sits up about 1/8". You can easily push it down with your finger, so with it mounted, it'd probably stay down. I took some pics so you all could see how they fit. The white bucket is the original RE one.

I have no knowledge how these are actually made, but from the way I would do it, the 1/8" gap you guys are seeing is from the "spring back" I'm assuming these were made by making a mold then vacuum forming the plexi/acrylic over the mold (mold being the headlight bucket shape) But the problem with this is its the exact curvature you need. Much like metal bending, it will have spring back ie, if i want to bend a piece of metal 90* i will have to bend it 93-95* to compensate for the spring back. if you want to attempt fixing it yourself, some heat should solve your issue.

Also as for applying vinyl, a tip is using soapy water or windex the area prior to applying the vinyl, the fluid will help the vinyl from sliding around allowing you to more accurately place the decal. then you can use a credit car to squeegee the air bubbles and fluids out. Allow the fluids to dry before removing the transfer paper and you will have a perfectly aligned and bubble free decal =)

 

i would recommend this, actually i'd recommend Rapid Tac, if this were normal vinyl, but this is paint mask. easy enough to move around and reposition without any application fluid. also, the bubbles don't matter, and there's no transfer tape involved.
