A lot of people don't realize it, but there's a bolt that mounts this handle directly to the door. Most people don't know about it because the tab has long been broken off by whoever the first idiot was that took off your door panel for speakers or whatever. Basically the only correct way to install and uninstall the door panel is THROUGH the window switch. You have pop the switch out, look through the hole at a funny angle, and unscrew the top bolt before doing all the other bolts and clips.

So yea you may need to get yourself a new trim piece, but with this properly installed you won't be pulling on the trim at all anymore.

You get one of the three pieces above the handle (all aluminum just different finishes). As red_dragon said, the handle mounts directly to the door at the top and bottom. The reason your plastics are cracked is because the door handle failed and your passengers were actually pulling on the plastics and foam door skin itself . There are 4 mounting holes on the handle that connect it to the plastic and door pannel, but thats just to keep it all together. you are really only pulling on the handle, the rest of the plastic is supposed to just come along for the ride and look nice (kinda like your passenger )

I mean, I wasn't serious...until you mentioned it. And we were all also wondering how much shipping is on the free oil coolers.

Time limit or quantity limit?

We're shooting for 100 handles, but anything around 70 and we'll be pretty satisfied.

I will gladly take a t-shirt for being one of the first to pay for the handle. I would rock a sakebomb t-shirt around campus.

Man I really dont wanna put anymore money into this car right now because I need to start saving for a daily driver, but i've been waiting for this FOREVER!!! I can't pass up this opportunity, i'm def gonna buy this. The rest of my interior is shot and needs a LOT of work, but I don't really care, all I care about is when ever a passengers gets in the car, I don't wanna have to say be careful!!! like I always do, all I wanna say is.."get in" haha i'll have to wait until my next paycheck

I can probably do some sort of refinishing/repair on the plastic parts or something

My payment has been sent.. Id like two T-shirts please just because thats a hell of a lot of money for a door handle On a serious note, why no drivers side handle, do they not break as well? Neither of mine are broken at the moment, just doing this for some "preventative maintenance".. just curious.

Probably a few weeks or so? To be honest we're not sure how long it will run. Wt this point we're just gonna play it by ear.

Hey we know it's not cheap, and we're not trying to "convince" anyone to buy this thing... but the impetus for us making it was that the plastic handles always break, when they do it destroys your door pannel, and mazda charges more than this for another plastic one. Basically if you *EVER* have to replace it, you'll be paying at least this price if not more to mazda.

Here's my most recent experience w/ these failing:

I just took apart 3 FD door panels in the last couple weeks to test fit this metal one (wanted to make sure everything lined up on multiple cars... and it did perfectly ). Anyway, one we knew ahead of time one was completely broken, and the surrounding plastics and door panel (which is NLA [no longer available] from mazda) were pretty badly damaged, as the door was being pulled closed with the inner foam skin and plastics . But the other two we just wanted to verify fitment. Those other two handles were a *tad* wiggly in retrospect but I would not have suspected anything as they seemed basically ok.

After we removed the door panels we found one handle had the top mount cracked in one place at the top, that's the early failure stage. The other had a completely missing section on the top mount and a crack running along the base of the thinner plastic section. With the top mount totally failed, he was actually pulling on the plastics and foam to close the door. The crack appeared from pulling on the plastics, and once that piece actually breaks off, you are pulling only on the foam of the door and the whole (irreplaceable) door panel begins to disintegrate. Anyway, this got me worried.

So I went back home to my stock MB 94 (the one I DON'T use for test fitting), to pull off the panel cause I was curious about my own car now . (Keep in mind I've religiously told passengers "DONT TOUCH THAT HANDLE" since I got the car in '02 with 50K). Come to find out this whole time, the top mount had a huge section missing and was essentially not connected. Nice. Add to this the handle Dan sent me a couple months ago from his 94, which also had the top mount totally cracked off.

Moral of the story is.... I've seen many many handles in the last couple months working on this, and have not seen a SINGLE ONE that was not damaged. I replaced the one on my stock FD, and the door feels WAY more solid when you close it. I guess that's cause I'm pulling the door and not the panel now. If your door doesnt feel absolutely solid when you close it, or you can flex the handle at all by twisting it, or pulling it, pull the panel off and verify the condition of the handle. Then you can make an educated decision.

-Heath

Hmm editing is not working... that's weird.

Anyway, a quick aside... when we needed an undamaged handle to make a cast from we scoured the forum, friends, our own cars, etc. Every one we came across was broken in one way or another. We ended up having to buy a new handle from mazda to make the cast from
