Another reason why I haven't paid yet is because i'm currently broke, and there was no way for me to come up with $300 that fast however there is no doubt I will have the money sometime in October, which starts in a few days

Where exactly does the stock handle break? I just took my door apart to check the handle out and surprisingly everything look's new, no cracks etc. It does look rather flimsy though for a handle. I bet I could "beef it up" with some plastic epoxy since it has not yet been compromised.

I'd just hate to spend $325 for something I might never use. Then again, maybe I could sell the stock handle after the group buy ends and recoup half the cost! :shrug:

 

Mine broke right above where the grip handle. The handle part just breaks. It's very common to see an RX-7 without the passenger side grip. You can reinforce it, with some epoxy, but mine didn't look exactly the same after it snapped. It dried crooked or something. I also put too much epoxy and had to sand some of it out because the window switch couldn't fit.

The mount that screws directly to the door breaks as well. So I couldn't even mount it to the door after I reinforced it.

This is a great alternative to purchasing a new one from Mazda (OVERPRICED and you can't just buy the handle itself you will need to purchase the entire trim as well).

If your handle didn't break yet, I would either purchase this one and sell your old one (good idea btw) or reinforce it yourself.

 

The door feels much more solid with the aluminum handle compared to even a new plastic one, for more money. Aside from the feel though, I've seen tons of door handles and am pretty sure I know how the whole failure process goes down:


Typically the top mount (in back of the window switch) is the first to go. The plastic there is very thin around the bolt hole, and even w/out a forceful breakage can crack over time. Likewise, if an audio/alarm installer, previous owner, or anyone not using the service manual attempted to pull off the door panel, they probably ruined it. The pass. door panel is NOT intuitive. Typically people take out all the screws and bolt behind the cap on the door, and then start pulling to try to pop out the plastic "pop/push fasteners". Eventually they figure out the panel aint comin off, scratch their head a bit, and a sudden burst of wisdom leads them to finally pop out the window switch, and find the "hidden" bolt . At that point they've more than cracked or disintegrated the flimsy top handle mount.

Once the top mount is cracked or broken, the door is only connected to the handle at the lower mount and by the screws that attach to the foam panel. Now the real problems start. The panel and handle start flexing at the top, cracking the top section of the handle (at the little indentation line), or breaking the mounts that go to the door plastic and interior foam door skin.

Once those are gone the top of the entire handle can break off but that's the least of your worries lol. The door plastics (though really expensive) can be replaced if destroyed... heaven forbid. But the door foam/skin cannot be bought for any price from mazda... it's no longer available! I think they used to sell in the $1,200.00 range, but for all intents and purposes, they are irreplaceable. The used parts currently attached to the FD's that are still in existence, are what we will be cannibalizing from now until the FD is an "antique" For those of you that didn't know.... treat those suckers like they are made of gold. Protect them and don't drill holes in them for tweeters and crap

just bought new 94 plastics, and having experienced the carnage that can happen with these handles, it's worth getting the aluminum just to have piece of mind.

 

Thats good to know I just tossed my tan interior in the garbage cause nobody wants it!
