FD OLED odometer screen Replacement
FD OLED odometer screen Replacement
Hey Everyone! A lot of you know I have been repairing Odometer screens on the FD for quite a while and have repaired around 300 of them for people so far. I currently schedule out about 5 a week just due to capacity reasons as my main line of work keeps me pretty busy. I did the original development on this by reverse engineering the board circuitry for a larger manufacturer, and Found most of the issues with the screen at this point. Still there have been some boards where the onboard processor has dies and cannot at this point be replaced. So I set out for an alternate solution And came up with the idea for replacing the process or and screen altogether with a much more updated version:
Behold! the Oled odometer screen which opens the door to many new possibilities including a digital read out of the odometer in both metric and imperial units AND a digital readout for Speed! Longer term will also include readouts for boost, and other features including a can bus input option for those with aftermarket ECUs. I am approaching the project in phases. Phase 1 will include just a drop in replacement for the odometer screen retaining your mileage with a digital speed readout as well. I am 90% complete on this phase already. The various screens will be toggled through using the factory trip reset stick and a 3 second hold of the reset stick will reset the trip. I hope to be installing these towards the end of summer. Phase 2 will include the can bus option. phase 3 will likely be a complete drop in replacement for the speedo board to a digital speedo unit!
Below are some pictures as to where i stand so far. The programming for phase 1 is complete and just needs to be compiled for the correct processor. From there i will just need to perform longer term testing to workout any obvious bugs in the firmware.

Great! I will keep this updated as details are finalized. right now i have a few custom PCBs on order and scheduled delivery at the end of july!
Im not aware of any buit thats not to say they dont exist.

part of this project is to update the dated looking display. Oled tech does not really mimic the older stuff products used in 1993 so most people looking for this are happy with the coloring especially with newer LED backlit gauge appliques. that said i understand this wont be for everyone. i might try an amber filter as stated above but its not one of my key focal points.
I love the idea! Great work!
While this exact solution is not for me, i could se myself digging the ability to do this, just using the 93 type LCD display letters on a 100% stock looking amber screen.
It would be incredible subtle and pass for oem, bit also incredible useful.
Thanks for getting this idea planted in my head

no problem and good luck lol
Yes I will...still waiting to hear back from the circuit board manufacturer. The 5 samples were supposed to be done by the end of july so that i could a few out there and testing. looks like that will be pushing into august now though.

Demand from like 3 people. I'm sorry they don't like the oled screen, but that hardly justifies any deviation from my laid out phase plan for this project when I had to cap a preorder list at 50 and have as many people on FB and Instagram following the process.
I have no horse in it, but I'm just curious do you have programmatic control of the color or are the displays built with a static color at the hardware level?
I know I have seen OLEDs for embedded devices that could have the color controlled per pixel before, but if your screen is fixed color then yeah there's not much you can be expected to do about it.

YYeah due to space limitation I'm limited to a very specific size screen. I was surprised to find an off the shelf part that fit as well as it does but it's a monochromatic OLED so it's hardware level. If I come across a bus communicable multicolor screen of the right size I'll definitely test it out. I already looked but there wasn't anything at least at that point.
